My Official #ROW80 Round 3 Goals Post

Compared to the last time, when I didn’t know what to expect, this will be easy. Most of what I say I’m going to do has been laid out for me elsewhere.

Writing:

  • Successfully complete Fast Draft. It starts this Saturday and I’m waiting until then to see what the requirements are.
  • Successsfully complete Camp NaNoWriMo during August. The rules are the same as for the big one in November, a 50K-word novel written entirely during the month.
  • Post to the blog twice a week, not counting my Wednesday check-in. You might have noticed last week that I picked themes for Tuesday (Two For Tuesday) and Thursday (The Thursday Ten). I’m going to continue with those two themes. I might add a third day (either Free-Form Friday or Facts on Friday) in September.

Reading:

  • Read one craft book a week. I have a whole shelf of them, and that doesn’t include the Kindle. It’s been a few years since I read the books, so it’s time for a review.
  • Read one non-craft book a week. I have tons on my Kindle and half a dozen paperbacks that I keep saying I’ll read. Now would be the time to do that.

I want to make sure that the goals are simple and measurable, because, well, them’s the rules.

Good luck to everyone doing the challenge! I’ll be around to check on you…

  1. Why hello there, Mr. John! Oh, Fast Draft – I’ve learned a lot this past week while doing it solo, and apparently there is so much more to learn when doing it with a group. Mine was supposed to start officially today… but everyone is quiet for some reason. Hmmm… I might need to go bug the group.

At any rate – good luck in both Fast Draft and ROW80 this round!

    1. Yeah, I kind of guessed that all was not right with the world Fast Draft-wise when you didn’t update all weekend. That’s why I told myself not to even think of starting until everything started formally. Candy says it can be done, and she’s busier than a one-armed paperhanger, so there’s got to be a trick to it. For all I know, it could be to move into a motel for two weeks…

      1. Hah! I thought of calling out sick for two weeks… but I like my job (don’t tell anyone though!)

Upping your word count goals every day is a great way to start, but just hold off to start for the official. Candy is very clear on that. She scolded me a little on Friday, which abruptly stopped my week of solitude! (It was all in good fun, and I totally needed it anyway. I was getting overwhelmed on my own.)

  2. Hey, a fellow FastDrafter, too awesome! I’ll be in the class with you, looking forward to some fun insanity 🙂
Great goals, John, especially the reading which sometimes gets swept aside by the chaos of life. All the best for the coming round, you’ve got a fantastic start here!

    1. Fast Draft should be a riot, that’s for sure. The interaction alone should be worth the price of admission.

I’m already lining up books that I want to read this time around. Mary and I like to get out one afternoon a week and just read. I get some of my best ideas that way, because I’m not tempted to go online or do anything else. Good luck to you, too.

  3. Simple, you say? John, your goals make me weak in the knees! I could manage any two or possibly even three of them, but the whole shebang would probably send me right round the twist. I’ll be cheering you on!

    1. I’m approaching it with a kid’s mind. Kids don’t know that you can’t do something, so they’ll try it and, if it doesn’t work, they’ll keep trying it until either they succeed or they put themselves in the hospital. (I went “round the twist,” as you say, years ago.)

  4. good luck with the august version of campnanowrimo. i just finished the june version, and i wrote just over 80K words. though, i’m not in love with that WIP so i’m working on something different for this round of row80. i’m looking forward to reading about your experiences with fastdraft!

    1. I’ve never really been in love with any of my NaNoNovels; I doubt that I could put my hand on any of them now. I tended to forget about them after I got the certificate. I don’t plan on doing that this time.

I’ll be sure and check in from Fast Draft as I think of it.

  5. Excellent! I just signed up for Fast Draft and Revision Hell… I’m terrified. And only half a dozen? I’m a book hoarder. I have piles of books everywhere that I need to read. 🙂

    1. Are you doing Fast Draft starting 7/7? I’ll see you there! By a half dozen books, I mean actual paper-and-ink; there are about ten times that many on my Kindle…

  6. Wow – your goals are impressive! Your books collections sounds like mine – I keep telling myself I need to stop buying books until I get caught up on all the ones I have, yet I still find myself roaming the bookstore shelves…

    1. That’s just the phyiscal paper-and-ink books. There are close to 70 more on the Kindle, and I just keep adding more. This time, I stuck with goals that were things I was planning on to start with, so finishing them means that I accomplish that goal. Glad they sound impressive. Thanks for stopping by!
