BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “White Christmas” Results

To say the least, this was interesting. I expected The Drifters to run away with this one, but it came very close to a tie, and had I cast a vote, it would have ended in a tie. The final score:

The Drifters: 7

The Barberettes: 6

A couple of notes:

  • Several of you said that they liked the original from Holiday Inn, sung by Bing Crosby and Martha Mears, the best. It’s a classic, that’s for certain, and there are few singers more recognizable than Bing. It’s also one of my favorite versions, and the movie is one of our favorites. Come on, Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire? It doesn’t get much better than that.
  • Some of you who voted for The Barberettes did so because they didn’t like Clyde McPhatter’s voice in the second verse. Interesting, because McPhatter was a big reason for the group’s success. Likewise, people who voted for the Drifters didn’t care for the “doo-wee-ee-oo” and other vocal elements of the Barberettes’ version.
  • And, for a couple of you, it was a case of whose version they hated least.

This might have been the best battle fought at this blog since I began battles back in September, and I want to thank everyone who voted. The next battle is a week from Thursday, coincidentally the first post of 2015. Hope to see you here.
