So, in my last Battle of the Bands, I chose Lieber and Stoller’s “Hound Dog” as the song and two artists, Big Mama Thornton and Elvis Presley, who had #1 hits with it. Big Mama’s version topped the R&B chart in 1953, Elvis topped the Pop chart in 1956.
No surprise on the final tally:
Elvis Presley: 11
Big Mama Thornton: 6
The vote tally includes my vote, for Big Mama Thornton. I had never heard her version of the song before my Lieber & Stoller post, and as great as Elvis’s version is, I thought hers was more fun to listen to.
Anyway, congratulations to Elvis, and I’m sure both these artists will be contestants in a future battle.
The next battle is Tuesday, September 1, and it will mark one year since I started doing Battle of the Bands. Be sure to join me then.
Considering that The King Of Rock ‘N’ Roll was one of the contestants, this was actually a pretty close, very respectable Battle.

I really thought Big Mama had a chance. Well, what can you do?

I’m not surprised Elvis won. Big Mama did a nice job, but she just didn’t do it for me. Maybe, if I heard it another day and my mood was just right then she might have a shot at winning me over. Good battle, John!

Putting her up against Elvis was probably a bad idea, but with this group, you can never tell. I would wager that a lot of the judges had never heard Big Mama Thornton’s version of it; I know I hadn’t.

Big Mama put up a good fight and I’m a bit surprised to see that she did as well as she did. But…”Long Live the King!” Not saying that he’s still alive or anything though.

Wow, I thought there would be a bigger margin between Elvis and Thornton. This was a closer one than I would have thought.

Personally, I would have been disappointed if mine was the only vote for her. I knew that a couple of people would choose hers.

Although Elvis won by quite a margin, it wasn’t as big a margin as I thought it would be. I found it interesting you thought Mama Thornton’s was more fun, since that’s what I said about Elvis’ version. LOL

for your next one you should do Little Richard/Pat Boone Tutti Frutti….

There’s an idea, or have Pat Boone go up against Fats Domino on “Ain’t That A Shame.” Nah, you’re right, Little Richard…

On second thought, I’m almost positive the man in the white bucks would be shut out in either case. Even so, it might be worthwhile.

I had a hunch Elvis would run away with this one. :) Some of the other battles were close.

It could have been worse: it could have been a shutout.

Aw, boooo… Like you, I thought the Thornton version killed Elvis’s. Ah, well. It was a cool battle, John.
