The Friday Five: Songs With “Pain” In The Title

My knee is killing me. I get this terrible shooting pain when I walk on it. I’m hoping with enough Aleve that it’ll go away on its own, but if it still feels this bad on Monday I’m calling the doctor. But, it gives me an excuse to give you five songs with “pain” in the title.

The Police, “King of Pain” From 1983’s Synchronicity, it reached #1 on the Mainstream Rock Chart and #3 on the Hot 100.

Carly Simon, “Haven’t Got Time For The Pain” From 1974’s Hotcakes, it reached #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart in the US and #1 on its Canadian Counterpart.

Robert Cray, “The Forecast Calls For Pain” From 1990’s LP and EP Midnight Stroll, this wasn’t released as a single.

Eurythmics, “No Fear, No Hate, No Pain (No Broken Hearts)” This was an album track on 1983’s Touch, and wasn’t released as a single.

Alice Cooper, “Pain” Another album track, this one from 1980’s Flush The Fashion.

Can you think of other songs with “pain” in the title? Leave me a comment and I’ll get to them next week.

That’s your Friday Five for February 17, 2017.

  1. I remember the song by the Eurythmics, otherwise not much recollection of the others. I take Turmeric in a capsule form and also use it in our food. I also use an ActiPatch loop where I have pain – something you may want to look into. http://www.actipatch.com/ It’s has worked for me, especially when I fell on my hand. And no, I don’t sell this product. 🙂

    1. I’ve heard a lot about turmeric. I think I’ll get my hands on some capsules and try that out. I haven’t heard of the ActiPatch, but I’ll have a look at the website. Thanks!

  2. Ouch feel better soon, John. My recent pain was another round of dental work last week. Had a tooth extracted 2 years ago and it’s been a journey to get to a replacement. As for the song, I always liked King of Pain (and the Police/Sting.) That being said, I came up blank on another song with “pain” in the title other than ones already on your list. However, I AM quite familiar with the group House of Pain and their ever popular hit Jump Around (circa 1992.) To that end, I think that a Friday Five with “jump” in the title will yield good results.

    1. So you have a gap where the tooth used to be? Are they going to put in a bridge or a false tooth? I think Mom had a bridge. Mine are holding up OK, but I chipped a cap and have just been living with it until I see the dentist again in June.

Jump! That’s a good one. I’ll start thinking about it. There’s yours, Van Halen’s “Jump,” Duke Ellington’s “Jump For Joy” (Chicago did that on a TV tribute to the Duke)… there’s three…

      1. Canine tooth (tooth #11 for dental enthusiasts) was extracted due to rare case of external resorption and I also had significant bone loss. Had two separate bone grafts intended to prepare a base for an implant and both grafts failed miserably. This latest procedure was a more cosmetic graft to prepare for a less permanent solution: a bridge. I’ve worn a temporary “flipper” tooth this whole time which has sucked. The flipper, which I slip in my mouth each morning, looks good but is uncomfortable after long days at work. And yes, Mom had a bridge (which failed numerous times.)

  3. I had the pleasure of seeing Robert Cray in concert once. He opened for someone, maybe Billy Squire. I can’t remember. But I love his sound.

I don’t like the Police at all. Sting’s voice is like fingernails on chalkboard. LOL

Isn’t it funny how we all like different things? One person could love a song, and someone else could hate it.

    1. Robert Cray is a tremendous guitar player and is still one of my favorites. I’ve seen him as the headlining act a couple of times and he never fails to put on a good show. Breaks a lot of strings, though.

    1. The Aleve is doing what it’s supposed to do, thank heaven. The knee still hurts, but not as much as it did a couple of days ago, when I wrote the post. Yes, I ‘m getting ahead whenever possible, with A to Z coming up and a project I’ve been working on for Two for Tuesday. Haven’t begun my April posts, but will soon.

  4. Like the Robert Cray song. I saw him with Eric Clapton once. Ended up liking his performance better than Clapton’s. I had not heard that song though. “Love This Pain” by Lady Antebellum (but then again, aren’t all country songs about some kind of pain?) Hope the knee gets better soon!

    1. Guitar Player had an issue with a record of Clapton and Cray playing Robert’s “Phone Booth.” I think Robert does a better job of playing blues than Eric, even though Eric’s been at it longer…

      1. We didn’t go to see Eric play the blues. We wanted to see him rock and roll. Should have known when Robert was on the bill with him that blues would be the fare for the whole night. Also, Clapton would start the first few chords of a song and then step back and let the rest of his band play. Generous, but we paid to see him not them.

  5. I haven’t heard all of these before. I thought the Rolling Stones had a pain song. I found a cover of an Otis Redding song, but it isn’t what I was thinking of, so I won’t take credit for adding it.

  6. I am completely stumped. Can’t think of any song with pain in it. Regarding your knee, is it your good leg or your bad one?

  7. Pain is becoming a more frequent part of my existence as I grow older. I try to ignore most of it. I went to the dentist this past Tuesday and ended up getting 4 shots of procaine to kill my pain. My jaw and inner cheek have been in pain ever since.

You’ve stumped me with the pain song theme. You’ve picked the ones I would have thought of if I had even thought of any.

    1. As a friend of mine said, “If it ain’t hurting, it ain’t working.” Dental pain is a whole different animal than pain anywhere else. I can see where you’d be miserable.

  8. King of Pain was popular when I’d just separated from my first wife, so it comes with even more painful memories. The only thing that kept me sane back then was playing keyboards 🎹 and doing backup vocals onstage in Ringmaster.

“Puffin” up fluffy and sweet. Now wait – now flip it!”
    – Carly Simon, “Hotcakes”

Remember the old one-liner about the guy saying, “Doctor, it hurts when I do that…”?

    Hope you feel better soon.

    1. “Well, don’t do that. Have you had it before?”
      “Yes.”
“Well, you got it again.” (somewhat out-of-tune version of “Smoke Gets In Your Eyes” on the violin)

        1. I’m starting to resign myself to some kind of knee surgery. I have to see my doctor soon, anyhow, although the pain has subsided (with 9 Aleve a day, probably not a good idea for too long), and I’m sure the topic will come up. I think I’m looking at more rehab on the leg with lymphedema as well…

  9. I am no stranger to pain let me tell you…but if you have a lot of joint pain, I have a recipe for a shake that was given to me by my chronic pain specialist. He studies holistic medicine too so that us pain patients can try all sorts of different things. It honestly does help me (unless it’s wishful thinking…) and it tastes good. I’ll leave it here for you to try… or not 😉 I hope that you feel better. Pain is no joke.
(now you can tweak this recipe with whatever fruit and fruit juice you want)
    1/2 tsp turmeric
    1/2 tsp ground chia seeds
1/2 tsp ground flax seeds (make sure they’re ground!)
    1/2 tsp hemp hearts
    1/4 tsp cinnamon
    1 banana
handful of fruit (I use frozen raspberries)
1/2 cup of coconut milk or fruit juice (I sometimes do half coconut milk and fruit juice)
    Some ice
Throw it all in a blender and mix till smooth.
    – the spices are all known for their anti-inflammatory properties.
