I saw this line in a post by Stephen and it hit a chord, because it’s happened to me.

One-Liner Wednesday is brought to you each week by Linda Hill and this station, and it’s sponsored this week by Romper Room, makers of Weebles Tree House. Weebles wobble, but they don’t fall down!
Seems like most of the “classic” rock they play in the grocery store where I shop is from the nineties–not old enough for me to remember and too new for me to recognize it. The music at my dentist is the worst though. They pipe in a current hits station–a lot of hip hop or something of that nature. A lot of it sounds like variations of the same song. As though visiting the dentist isn’t jarring enough already they have to make the experience even worse with that music.

My dentist, too. The one who retired would play an oldies station. That’s where I came up with the concept of “EBS Specials.” He thought it was hilarious…

John, Stephen’s one-liner is funny but true. I always smile when someone call 80s mewsic “the oldies”. I wonder if our parents thought the same thing when call the 50s, “the oldies”? lol I remember the Weebles commercial. It’s time for me to scoot. Where did I put my walker? 🙂 Have a good evening!

I’m not sure. Mom and Dad were married and had me before Bill Haley’s “Rock Around The Clock,” so they didn’t see rock as their oldies. They were raised more in the Big-Band era, and I don’t call that “oldies,” because it’s still around.

That commercial is a classic! The day I hear a Muzak version of Free Bird is the last day I get in an elevator. 😛

It boggles the imagination to think of what a Muzak version of “Free Bird” would sound like…

They were after my time. We had to play with rocks and sticks! And we LIKED it! (Sad that “Saturday Night Live” doesn’t have performers of Dana Carvey anymore.)

Hey, that’s a good line, John. I’m gonna have to start reading more of this Stephen T. McCarthy’s writing.
[;o) [Thanks for the nod!]
Weebles Wobble But They Don’t Fall Down. Man, I remember that. Years later, we used to say that about our drinking partner, Pooh. Except we were being sarcastic because Pooh drank and fell down a lot. Ha! (He’s not had a drink now since 1986… the poor guy.)

Good for Pooh if he’s been able to stay away from it that long. I know more than a few Friends of Bill, as they say.

Kind of makes me think of Elvis Presley. He gyrations were considered dirty back in the day, and now his songs, complete with hip movements, are considered “classic.” Can you imagine how mild his act was by today’s standards?

I see him now and wonder what all the fuss was about. I see some of what more recent acts get away with and wonder why people objected to Elvis so vehemently. A lot of it was the times, I’m sure: he was singing what many considered “black” music, and that combined with the dancing onstage and the sneer (which was just one of his features) made him dangerous somehow. People were the same about The Beatles, and those guys just stood and played…

Especially when they play the elevator music version.

Don’t get me started on that, although you find it in fewer places these days. I worked in an office that played Muzak, and honestly, you could set your clock by when the songs played. Every day, the same songs at the same time.

At least your “classic” rock is the best rock. Right John?

I stopped following popular music about twenty years ago. Does that tell you anything? 😉

Ha! I know what you mean. I will find favor with current songs here and there, but I always head back to my classic rock and 80’s hair bands. Good stuff!

OMG…that is a perfect line from Mr. Stephen! I love it and kind of hate it because it’s so true:) hopefully they never play rap crap or hip hop because that would just suck.

By then, I won’t care. I don’t spend any time in stores anymore because of my knees (though I put on new shoes this morning and presto!, leg pain is gone).
