A Simple Theme For The 2017 #atozchallenge

The 2017 Blogging from A to Z Challenge starts a week from this coming Saturday, as I’m sure you know, and today is the day we all reveal the theme we’re going to use, if in fact we’re going to use a theme.

Two years ago, my theme was “words that start and end with the same letter.” This year’s theme is similar to that. It was an idea I got from watching Jeopardy!.

Words that end in the letter after the one they start with

A week from Saturday, my post will have a topic that starts with “A” and ends with “B.” The following Monday, the topic will start with “B” and end with “C,” and so on through the month (except Sundays), until Sunday, April 30 (this being a year that April either starts or ends with a Sunday), when the topic will start with “Z” and end with “A.”

Those of you who have followed the blog for some time know I maintain all my regular features (Monday’s Music Moves Me, Two for Tuesday, etc.) during the Challenge, so you can expect to find multiple posts each day of the Challenge. The Challenge posts will be tagged with #atozchallenge so you can find them in the list on the right side of the page. Also, because of the logistical changes we’ve made to the Challenge this year, I’ll be leaving a comment on the Challenge blog each day with a direct link to that day’s post, as well as updates to Facebook and Twitter which you can find using the #atozchallenge hash tag.

In honor of the occasion, here is a promo from ABC, announcing their fall lineup for Friday nights in 1970…

I look forward to hearing about what your theme is!

  1. You call this ‘simple’? That’s the most elaborate theme I’ve read yet, John 😉 But, this will be super thrilling to read. I love challenges within challenges 🙂

    1. I’ll be sure to check yours out. I’ve done some creative things with the theme, so I’m not sure how many new words you’ll learn, but you should have fun.

  2. Your theme is unique and yummy! even better than portmanteau words if that’s possible. Can’t imagine the kind of research that’s taken…look forward to read more.

    Best wishes,

  3. I have a feeling that my vocabulary is about to be increased by …. oh… about 20 words 😉 What a great idea! I’ll be following!

  4. This is my first year with this particular blog (3rd with a different blog) and my theme will be…well, The Unknown Journey Ahead. I have a brother in law who is developmentally disabled – and there are a lot of unknowns in his future, and mine. I already subscribe to your blog and I must say, you have picked a unique theme!

  5. Wow, it wasn’t challenging enough already! This sounds like a tough one. But I bet you handle it with Aplomb! Alright, I’m having fun already. Definitely will be back to see where you take this.

If you wanna follow some flash fiction, I’ll be at your service at JohnDavisFrain.com all month long. Except Sunday, of course, for recuperation.

Have fun with it, and good luck. Don’t get barbaric. Okay, I’ll quit that now. I’m liking your theme more and more. Wish I’d thought of that!

      1. That’s funny. I love Jeopardy! but I quit watching TV to reclaim some of my time and free up said time for writing. I do miss Jeopardy! though. I mean, I sucked at it, but I miss it still.

  6. John, you really do challenge yourself! I don’t think I could pull this one off, so I’m gonna be sure to check out these alphabet prompt words. Cool idea! The ABC fall lineup is neat. I remember all of those shows, many I had forgotten until I saw this vid. What a gas! A real trip down memory lane! 😀

    1. I love the old commercials and shows like this one. The networks actually used to care enough to run shows like that (maybe they still do, I don’t know).

You’d be surprised, when I started getting into my theme, all the words just started coming to me. A few times, I’d go to the Scrabble dictionary and while I was looking at words one would just pop into my head. Should be a good challenge.

  7. That’s your idea of a “simple” theme? HAHAHA! I look forward to your posts!

P.S. I’ve had miserable luck trying to create clickable links. I’ve tried your instructions, as well as others, with no luck. I will try again on here.

    1. Quick question, I use IFTTT for synching my blogspot and wordpress and just today I noticed that some of the pictures I post don’t come out on the wordpress site. It says something about possible spam and Bitly doesn’t like them. They are pictures that I take with my own camera so I know there is nothing spammy about them. They work fine on Blogspot. I can see a big issue with the A to Z as I am using lots of pictures! Any ideas?

      1. Couple of questions:

Where are the pictures in question located? Do you upload them to Blogger, or do you keep them somewhere else (e.g. Flickr)?
How are you specifying the URL in the <img tag? Is it the raw URL, or a short link to it?

        1. The pictures are just on my computer, not kept on any other site and I just upload them to blogger as I am writing my posts. I just use the jpg. I don’t specify a URL (unless that is automatically happening – I am not ?//?? savvy, that’s why I use a Mac. LOL. When I went on my WordPress site and uploaded the exact same picture directly to the post it worked with no problem.

          1. Okay, so the pictures are on the Blogger side, in whatever they call the media library. If they’re not showing up in WordPress, there’s a security issue with WP trying to go after images stored in Blogger. How long has this been happening? Always, or just recently?

I’m going the other way, with the pictures being stored in WordPress, and there’s no problem there. This is a new one on me…

            1. I think it just started recently. Maybe I’ll try going the other way too and see what happens. Definitely don’t want a glitch for the A to Z! At least I still have some time to practice 🙂 Thanks for your help, John.

  8. Your theme sounds tricky as well as unique. If anyone can pull this off it’s you, John.

So far today’s reveal seems to be going well. I think a lot of bloggers get this new method of doing things just fine. There are probably more links so far than I’ll be able to visit in a day.

  9. Hi John – gosh that’s a great idea … Z I could guess … A will be interesting to find out … and that’s a lot of blogging posts! Cheers and see you around – Hilary

  10. Your theme sounds quite good and I will be looking forward to see P to Q:) OMG….the Brady Bunch and The Partridge Family and that TV show I don’t remember at all…with the Professor which I think was with Gig Young??
