No, it’s not secretly Tuesday, and yes, I intended to post this today.

I have a certain weakness for female singers who sing in the contralto range, such as Julie London, June Christy, Karen Carpenter, k. d. lang, Patsy Cline, and Diana Krall, the pianist and singer from Nanaimo, British Columbia. She’s sold over sixteen million albums and earned numerous awards, so obviously she’s quite popular, and you can’t turn on smooth jazz radio and not hear her sometime during the day. She’s married to Elvis Costello and the mother of twin boys, Dexter and Frank, who just turned ten in December. She counted among her mentors bassist Ray Brown and singer Rosemary Clooney.
Here are a couple of tunes by the lovely Ms. Krall. First, a cover of Billy Joel’s “Just The Way You Are.”
Now, “The Look Of Love,” covering the Bacharach-David composition originally done by Dusty Springfield in the movie Casino Royale.
And, what the heck, one more: “Fly Me To The Moon (In Other Words),” the jazz standard that was first sung by Kaye Ballard and popularized by Frank Sinatra. She does a great piano solo in this one.
Before today, were you familiar with Diana Krall’s music? What do you think of it?
Never heard of her before. I did listen to the youtube songs and she is a good singer but she didn’t impress me much. Sorry.

I like her voice, but I wouldn’t rush out to buy any of her albums, either.

I’ve never heard of her, but I have a friend who adores female vocalists who can sing in that range! I am for sure going to let him know about this one! 🙂

He likely knows about her, but by all means, tell him, in case he doesn’t.

John,
Diana Krall is a good singer but not all of her covers work well with her mewsical style. Of this set of songs you shared, I liked her rendition of “The Look of Love”. The list of singers you mention in your lead in I really like Julie London and Karen Carpenter the best. Nice “K” contribution! Thanks for visitng my Art Sketching Through the Alphabet “K” (Kanga & Roo) post!

Her “The Look Of Love” is almost as good as Dusty Springfield’s original. And Dusty is another singer I’d include in that group…

I had not heard of Diana Krall until a few years ago when Jeffrey Scott kept begging me to write about her. She does have a wonderful voice. I’m not sure why she gets so many haters when I put her in battles, although I was pleasantly surprised that she won my last battle despite the comments about her performance.

Cathy was saying she doesn’t always choose the best songs for her style. Beautiful voice and quite attractive, now if we could only get her some better material…

Hi John – she and Elvis Costello get a lot of air time over here … but I never realised she came from Nanaimo .. a place I have visited on Vancouver Island … and I do enjoy listening to them all .. cheers Hilary
Hi Courtney – Kony is an exceptionally cruel man – not nice at all and I would rather not be polite. Love the idea of the Kingdom of Hawaii … one day perhaps it’ll be back? Cheers Hilary

Interesting that she gets a lot of airplay. I can understand him; guess they play a lot of her because of him.

I have never heard her sing before but she is a regular at the Mountain Winery, one of the concert venues we go to. I don’t think I’d pay concert money to see her but I did like the songs you picked 🙂

Oh yes, she’s one I can listen to lots, mostly because when I hear her, I think she’s Diane Schurr. Terrible, I know, but Schurr is my preference.

Thanks for introducing her to me hahaha! I like this kind of music. And her voice is soothing, the same way as Karen Carpenter. I have to play the Carpenters’ “Only Yesterday” … been a while since I listened to that.

Karen Carpenter is one of those tragic stories that should never have happened. Her voice was fantastic, and she was a better-than-average drummer. She should have split from her brother and put her own band together; she’d still be alive today if she had.

Always liked her singing and piano style. I need to be in the right mood for it, but she’s good. Have a few of her CDs.
I enjoyed her husband too when he opened for Steely Dan here a couple years ago.

Elvis Costello, you mean? Kip is a big fan of his. I like some of his earlier stuff.

I know she is famous and loved as a great singer but I just don’t care for her and, for the most part, can’t stand her style of singing…it’s irritating to me. I know, I know..I’m a horrible person:)

No, you aren’t horrible. Like I said yesterday, not everyone likes every kind of music. That’s why there are so many kinds.
