Lighten up, Francis!
I’m not much of a Bill Murray fan, but the 1981 movie Stripes, which also starred Harold Ramis and John Candy (from SCTV), had some pretty memorable lines in it. The line above comes from this scene.

(Some of you might remember Stripe toothpaste. I went looking for an old commercial for it, but couldn’t find one.)
I very much remember Stripe toothpaste (it was fun for me as a child) and, unrelated, I also remember Stripes Fruit Stripe gum. Yikes, Tripes!

I remember Fruit Stripe gum. As with most Beech-Nut gums, it lost its flavor in a hurry. But the multicolored zebra was fun to watch.

I don’t remember the movie, but I remember the toothpaste, Stripes and Ipana.

There are a whole bunch that I haven’t heard about in years: Stripe, Ipana, Gleem, Pepsodent, Macleans, Ultra Brite…

Stripes is a movie we seem to run across pretty frequently, so I feel like I have the whole movie memorized! A majority of the movie was filmed here in Louisville, KY. The bar scene with the mud wrestling was filmed in a bar called the Toy Tiger, which has since shut down (thank God). My husband worked at a restaurant across the parking lot and always hated “homemade bikini night”, when we’ll-endowed young women would come in and order things like “sliced strawberries, whipped cream, and some Saran Wrap” – ICK!

So they’d go into the restaurant and ask for that? Man… I’d think they’d go to 7-Eleven or Quik Trip for that stuff….

Great scene. I liked Stripes when it came out – during another era of my life.

Do you realize it came out 36 years ago? That’s better than a generation. Gad, we were in our twenties then…

Ipana Toothpaste, what ever happened to them. What a memory.

Brush-a brush-a brush-a… There used to be hundreds of different brands of toothpaste that have disappeared without a trace. Remember Macleans?

I liked the movie Stripes, but had forgotten this line. I remember the toothpaste, too. My grandpa used it.

There’s not much about “Stripes” I do remember. It’s one of those movies I’ve seen bits and pieces of, but never from beginning to end. The close-order drill was fantastic…
