Time for the annual Thanksgiving “thanks!” post. I’m thankful for a lot of things. Right now I’m thankful that I did this post two years ago, and that all the songs in it were in a playlist, although one of them has been blocked in this country by WMG, because they can. But there was a ready substitute. I added a couple of songs, too.
- Bob Hope, “Thanks For The Memory” He sang this with Shirley Ross in the movie The Big Broadcast of 1938 (where this was taken from) and Hope used it for years as his theme song. He used to sing it at the end of all his specials.
- Sam & Dave, “I Thank You” This song was written by David Porter and Isaac Hayes and recorded by S&D in 1968. It reached #9 on the Hot 100 and #4 on the R&B chart that year, and was covered by ZZ Top on their 1979 album Degüello.
- Sly & The Family Stone, “Thank You (Falletinme Be Mice Elf Again)” This is a 1969 song and managed to reach #1 on the R&B chart, and reached #1 on the Hot 100 in February 1970.
- John Denver, “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” This was on his 1974 album Back Home Again, but it was this live version, from 1975’s An Evening With John Denver, that reached #1 on the Hot 100 and the Country chart. 1975 was evidently a big year for country and pop crossovers.
- Led Zeppelin, “Thank You” From their 1969 album Led Zeppelin II, written by Robert Plant and Jimmy Page.
- ABBA, “Thank You For The Music” This was on ABBA’s 1977 album, ABBA: The Album and was used as the title track from their 1983 compilation album in 1983. It wasn’t released as a single in the US, evidently.
- Céline Dion, “Thank You” A quintessential Céline Dion song.
- Otis Redding, “I Want To Thank You” From his 1965 album The Great Otis Redding Sings Soul Ballads.
- Kelly Clarkson, “Thankful” Title track from her 2003 debut album, but wasn’t released as a single. I know we have some Kelly Clarkson fans here.
- Cynthia Fee, “Thank You For Being A Friend” Written and originally performed by Andrew Gold, who released it as a single in 1978, which went to #25 nationally. I would have used that version, but as I mentioned previously, WMG blocked it for the US and probably several other countries. This is the version Cynthia Fee did as the theme song for The Golden Girls.
And that’s Monday’s Music Moves Me for November 20, 2017.
Monday’s Music Moves Me is sponsored by X-Mas Dolly, Callie, Cathy, and Stacy, so be sure and visit them, where you can also find the Linky for the other participants.
Love all your thankful choices, John! Nicely done! Hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! 🙂

That’s a pretty good song, but not one I heard when it was popular.

John,
“Thank You For the Memories” is a great song. We watched the movie years ago when went through a retro film kick. I can’t say “Thank God I’m A Country Boy” but I do thank God for being a country gal! 🙂 That’s such a fun, fun song! You brought some different “Thankful” tunes to the dance floor this week. Thanks for sharing and for being such a great friend. Have a joyful, blessed Thanksgiving, my friend!

There are surprisingly few “thanks” or “thank you” songs. I might just have to rerun this next year.

Thank YOU for the memories! Thinking of Bob Hope and his specials and remembering how he entertained the troops in VietNam – it does bring back a number of memories. Led Zepplin – one of my husband’s favorite groups. And how did I not thing of Sam and Dave? And I thank you. Happy Thanksgiving, John!
