#1LinerWeds from Marina Orlova

I know, “who’s Marina Orlova?” Marina is a very attractive and highly-intelligent woman from Russia who for many years maintained the website Hot For Words and made weekly videos on YouTube where she would delve into the derivation of words and language. Her biography tells us she has two degrees, “one in Russian Language Education and World Literature, with a specialization in Philology, and another in English Language Education, with a specialization in Philology.” She’s dropped out of the spotlight and has taken to painting in recent years, abandoning her Hot For Words alter ego, but has left a lot of her work for us to enjoy.

One-Liner Wednesday is brought to you each week by Linda Hill and this station. Now a word from Kodak film, the film in the familiar yellow box.

One of my favorite sites for dog pictures is The Hailey and Zaphod Chronicles.

  1. You sound like a Russian collaborator to me. I’m going to report you to someone. I don’t know who yet because it sounds like our whole country is collaborating with Russians. Like that’s a big deal to worry about.

  2. I love that quote and how true it is. My mom loved these types of quotes and sayings. I found many and wrote them out on better paper and placed them all around her pictures and flowers when we had her funeral.

    1. There are just some quotes that say it all. James Geary had a book called “The World In A Phrase” where he covered the subject of aphorisms, which are “tersely phrased statements of truths or opinions.” I think this would fit the definition.

  3. I love solitude. Many times I’ve wished for more. I don’t think I’ve ever really been lonely except when I was a misinformed teenager with no boyfriend. Even then it wasn’t really lonely, more like sad on prom night.

    1. Now that I think of it, I wish I had spent prom night alone. It didn’t help matters that it was held the night of graduation, at which point you start asking yourself “why am I at a high school dance?”

    1. They were. She was (and I assume still is) quite talented. I wish she’d get back into making videos, not just because she was nice looking but because she really could explain where words came from, and I’d love to see more of her art.

  4. I love the quote. It’s so true. 😀
And the commercial! I remember it! I had (maybe still do) one of those old box cameras with the big flash attachment. It was a relief to get a camera that would take the flash cubes that you could use four times. … God, I’m old. Hahaha!

    1. I got my aunt’s old Brownie camera when she got another one, and still remember the single-flash bulbs that you had to pop out each time. You had to be careful not to burn your hand on them. Of course, the flashcubes were pretty dangerous, too.
