Two For Tuesday: Joe Sample

Joe Sample was around the jazz world since the ’50’s when he, Stix Hooper and Wilton Felder started the Jazz Crusaders. By 1971, they shortened the name to The Crusaders and played some fantastic fusion, including having a Top 40 single, “Put It Where You Want It,” in 1972. He also started a solo career in the ’70’s and has worked with Miles Davis, George Benson, B. B. King, Eric Clapton and Steely Dan, among others. Here are a couple of examples of his solo work.

Joe died in 2014 after battling mesothelioma, leaving behind 25 albums as a solo act and many more with The Crusaders and as a sideman.

      1. Yes, I like it – much easier on the eyes, IMO. I just had surgery on my right eye and even though my vision is 100% improved, everything is much brighter! I never was a fan of stark white backgrounds.

  1. I didn’t know about him until now but I really love it. It is so enjoyable to listen to and intelligent if that makes sense. I am glad you showed me someone new to me

  2. This is a name that I hadn’t thought of in a while. I bought the Crusaders’ album Pass the Plate when it came out in 1971–such a great album! I think I might have kept that one when I was getting rid of my vinyl. I hope I still have it.

      1. I don’t know that song so it must have been on a later album. Pass the Plate is the only album by the group that I ever owned, but I listened to that record many many times.

  3. John,

Ooo, I’m loving this smooth jazz! Joe’s piano playing is pAwesomely furtastic! I’m going to check out more of his stuff on YT. Thanks for the introduction and share!

  4. Great song choices! And…I love what you’ve done with your blog! Did you end up upgrading, or not with the WordPress offer?

    1. I upgraded to a personal plan and got two years for $72. You can leave the “wordpress.” out of my old address now. I’m not sure if the new theme was a freebie, or one that was available because I’m a paying customer now. I like it: it’s very similar to the old one, but the font’s a little bigger and the text area a little wider and I can change the background color, about which I’ve only had one complaint…
