Song Lyric Sunday: “Find Another Fool”

First, Happy Birthday to our fearless leader, Helen!

Helen chose “found/find” as today’s prompt. Somewhere, from the deepest recesses of my brain, I remembered Marcia Ball and remembered that she had this song that just stuck in my mind…

It’s been a while since I’ve thought about her: she’s a blues singer, pianist, and songwriter, and does a fantastic job of all three. She’s won a number of awards from the Blues Music Association for her keyboard playing, including twice after they renamed the award for keyboard the “Pinetop” Perkins Award (Pinetop was the piano player for Muddy Waters for many years and enjoyed a notable solo career before and after his stint with Muddy). This was on her 1989 album Gatorhythms, which unfortunately was on a cassette and I wasn’t thinking when I told Mary to throw all of them away. (Lost a lot of good music in that purge; in my defense, it was after the stroke.) Without further ado (and yes, that’s how it’s spelled), Marcia Ball with her “Find Another Fool.”

Now we’re down to saying our goodbyes
And you still don’t see the truth
All I did was try to make life better for you
But a woman just gets tired of being used

So find another fool to love you
The world is full of girls like me
Find a fool to take care of you
That’s a girl I’d like to see
Who’ll be the one when all is said and done
I know you
You’ll find another fool

Now you say you want to talk it over
Maybe I will change my mind
But you never heard a word I ever told you
And it’s not my mind that needs to change this time

So find another fool to love you
The world is full of girls like me
Find a fool to take care of you
That’s a girl I’d like to see
You’ll be fine but you won’t know what she needs
And I know you
You’ll find another fool

You think hearts are made to be broken
Like your promises so easily broken
Too many good things have fallen at your feet
I wonder who’ll be the fool after me

Go find another fool to love you
The world is full of girls like me
Find a fool to take care of you
That’s a girl I’d like to see
I hope she doesn’t mind
When you don’t come home at night
Not all the time
Maybe once in a while
You tell her that you tried
But you can’t look her in the eye
And I know you
You’ll find another fool

Kelly Willis did a good version of this song as well. You might know her cover better. I only ever heard Marcia sing it up to yesterday, and hers is the version that bored its way into my heart…

That’s Song Lyric Sunday for October 7, 2018.

  1. Very nice, and I’d not heard it before, though I’ve heard her name. Now I need to go hear it from Kelly Willis. She’s a favorite of mine, and have seen her and Bruce Robison in concert.
