Song Lyric Sunday: “Give Me Just A Little More Time”

Helen’s choice of prompts for this week is “give/giving,” and the first song that came to mind was this one. I ran a Battle of the Bands on this on May 1, which Kylie Minogue won in a knockout against The Jam. But today, we’re going to go with the original: From 1970, The Chairmen of the Board with “Give Me Just A Little More Time.”

Lyrics from SongLyrics.com:

Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow

Life’s too short to make a mistake
Let’s think of each other and hesitate
Young and impatient we may be
There’s no need to act foolishly
If we part, our hearts won’t forget it
Years from now we’ll surely regret it

Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow

You’re young, and you’re in a hurry
You’re eager for love, but don’t you worry
We both want the sweetness in life
But these things don’t come overnight
Don’t give up ’cause love’s been slow
Girl, we gonna succeed with another blow

Just give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Baby, please, baby
Baby, please, baby

Love is that mountain we must climb
Let’s climb it together, your hand in mine
We haven’t known each other too long
But the feeling I have is oh so strong
I know we can make it, there’s no doubt
We owe it to ourselves to find it out

Just give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow, brr
Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Give me just a little more time
And our love will surely grow
Baby, please, baby
Baby, please, baby

The Chairmen of the Board were from Detroit and were signed to Holland/Dozier/Holland’s Invictus/Hot Wax label (as was 100 Proof (Aged In Soul), who did the song “Somebody’s Been Sleeping”, also in 1970). Lead singer General Johnson was teamed up with Eddie Custis (who left after the second album), Danny Woods and Harrison Kennedy. The single was issued in December 1969 and rose to #3 on the Hot 100, earning a Gold record, and #8 on the R&B chart. They had three more Top 40 hits, and continue to this day, albeit without Johnson, who died in 2010.

That’s Song Lyric Sunday for October 28, 2018.

  1. I know this song well and like it. I didn’t know about the band at all and, to be honest, when you wrote, Vhaimen of the Board, I thought you were showcasing Frank Sinatra😁

  2. Hi John – it’s certainly a great song … I hadn’t realised the band’s name was Chairman of the Board … but loved listening to it – cheers Hilary

  3. Great choice…Boy that was back in the day. Where has the time gone…Have a great week Mr. John. Love the look of your blog. I think I might just steal some of your ideas. You have to change things up every now and again. Blessings Mr. John ❤

    1. Thanks! The theme is Independent Publisher 2 and it came with the upgrade I went with. I had a choice of backgrounds and thought the tan looked the best. Steal whatever you want; I probably stole them from someone myself…

    1. I always try to pick a different song than anyone else, and I held back on this until I saw what everyone chose. If I hadn’t done this, I would have done Brenton Woods’s “Gimme Little Sign,” the one you picked…

      1. I try to do the same, and not duplicate any others. I like this one you picked for the challenge. Today I went into another room and turned on the radio, and it was playing your song! 🙂 Always good to hear it.
