A Little Technical Assistance For WordPress Users

This is for all us WordPress users who reply to their comments from the list that drops down when you click on the bell icon in the upper right-hand corner and look at the list, like this:

You might have noticed that, when you go to answer the comment, it suddenly disappears and ends up in your trash. This happens to me a lot, and I just figured out what does it.

When you click on a comment in the list, you get the whole comment instead of the preview and something that looks like this after it:

You might think, “okay, I can just start typing.” And when you start typing, the comment is replaced by a box that says “Comment trashed” or “comment moved to spam,” along with a place that says “undo,” which usually disappears by the time you notice it.

Here’s the deal: when the comment area looks like above, the cursor isn’t inside the reply box; it’s outside. If you press the A, S, T, L, or E key, the user interface assumes you want to toggle the “approved” flag, throw the comment in spam, trash it, “like” it, or edit it. In other words, the keyboard acts like the mouse, where the letter you choose is like clicking on the corresponding icon.

To make sure that doesn’t happen, be sure and click inside the reply box before you start typing, which should surround the box with a blue border, like this:

You can undo the damage, as it were, by going to the comment screen (click My Sites in the upper left-hand corner, then Comments in that menu).

Find the comment and click on whichever icon you need to. You can click on the menu at the top (the one that says “All,” “Pending,” “Approved,” “Spam,” and “Trash”) to limit the list to just those types.

Let me know if this helps.

    1. I chose not to change when they asked me and all that I can see that altered is the colour of the log in box. I wish they would leave things alone when they are working, my online bank has changed so before it took two clicks to see my balance and then make a payment now takes four, (going from one thing to the other) I have written to them to ask how that can possibly be progress!!

  1. When I click on the comment below the bell I get another, fuller, option to the left. Sometimes the comments start not ‘taking’ and while that is happening I take a copy and paste if I have to try again.

    1. I hit post comment too soon … I just checked my spam folder and wowzer. Thank you Word Press. It was all legit spam. Selling insurance and stuff like that. Those spam comments are a bit off-putting.

      1. Akismet (the spam controller on WordPress.com) does a particularly good job of sorting the actual comments from spam. Rarely does it toss legitimate comments in the spam folder or allow spam comments to reach the blog. I throw more comments into spam accidentally than it does.

  2. I’ve done that so many times, and it took me such a long time to work out how to retrieve those accidentally trashed comments – so thank you so much for explaining WHY it kept happening in the first place! πŸ™‚
