I was going through some old entries and found this post from almost five years ago, which I wrote a few years ago and expressed my opinion on the TV show Seinfeld.
As I said then, we welcome replies to our editorials.
One-Liner Wednesday is brought to you each week by Linda Hill and this station. This month, it’s also part of Just Jot It January.
And now, here’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E.‘s Robert Vaughn with a message from The Tire Industry Safety Council.
I watched it occasionally. Thought it was kinda funny. I think part of the appeal for me was like scary movies where you think, I wouldn’t be that stupid. Or in this case, weird. Couldn’t stand George though. I’m starting to feel the same way about The Big Bang Theory which I only discovered last year- it’s funny and easy to watch except that Sheldon is mean and obnoxious.

It’s Big Bang Theory’s final season, and I can’t think of anything I’ve laughed at since Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) joined the cast. I don’t think she’s the reason it’s stopped being funny, but I think she was a sign that the writers had run out of ideas and that maybe it should have ended then. Maybe before then, actually, when the humor seemed to center around Sheldon’s apparent Asperger’s…
As I was telling someone else, the characters in Seinfeld just left me cold. I didn’t care about them or what might happen to them.

Maybe that’s why I didn’t watch Seinfeld on a regular basis. I do enjoy the older Big Bang reruns more.

The first few seasons of TBBT were actually really funny. It’s when they started to make the stars “normal” that it started going downhill.

When my ex-husband starting watching Seinfeld, I was turned off by the characters, especially George. I watched it for awhile and found some of it funny, but in the end, I just wanted George to die from licking stamps.

I didn’t care what happened to any of them.

I watch the show and thought it was great. You’re right about the characters, but that, to me, is what made it so funny. In the end, they got what they deserved.

They say that the opposite of love isn’t hate, it’s indifference. That pretty much describes how I felt about the characters: I didn’t care what happened to them.

We used to watch that show all the time so I must have liked it. The hubby still watches whenever he can but it’s lost some of it’s appeal for me. I think you put it well — I don’t really like the characters, but the situations were so relatable it was funny.

I couldn’t relate to either, I guess.

Hi John, I got your reply from my blog post and you can’t believe what happened when I responded…It went red and deleted itself. I can’t find it anywhere. Is this stopping conservative speech or what ??? Please go back and put that comment on again. Thanks

Look in your comment trash or your spam folder. That happens to me a lot. If you aren’t in the reply area (so that the blue box surrounds it), some keys delete it, others toss it in spam, and I’m not sure which is which (maybe the T and S keys?).

You nailed the characters and despite the ugliness, I still enjoyed the show which is weird. What is funny is the famous soup Nazi episode, I have a deli downtown and the people working there would argue and snap at each other in Polish. I would see people take a step back and just quickly ask for the food they wanted and step away. I started to laugh because it was that episode in real life.

I think a lot of restaurants in TV shows and movies are based on actual places. The old Saturday Night Live sketch “cheeseburger, cheeseburger” was based on The Billy Goat Tavern on Lower Wacker Drive in Chicago. I remember seeing that the Soup Nazi was based on a real place in New York, but I’m sure practically every city has a place like that.

I always loved the show, but hated the characters. I think you nailed it!

Aside from Jerry’s voice that would sometimes crawl down my spine the way nails do on a chalkboard, I did like the show and will still watch it whenever I come across it on T.V. Sorry John! I am not a super fan though like some people I do know who can recite lines or name what episode this and this happened – oh there are those people out there.

No need to apologize, I know I’m in a minority here. The original exercise was to write about a TV show that everyone else loves but you hate.

I only rarely watch prime time TV shows when they are being aired. I almost never watched Seinfeld, so I don’t have an ability to agree or contradict. I can say that the few episodes I have seen haven’t made me want to watch more.

I’d never go out of my way to watch it. The local station that carried Braves games (the former WTBS, which was renamed WPCH when TBS went cable-only) would run it during rain delays. I’d leave it on for a show, hoping the delay was a short one, but after that, I’d turn the sound off.
