I’m Good Enough, and I’m Smart Enough, and Doggone It, People Like Me! #socs

Today’s word, “affirm,” is a leftover from Just Jot It January that was suggested by M. Oniker, who has a blog dedicated to just this weekly exercise called “This Just SoCS.”

I usually hear “affirm” in legal settings, where someone is asked to declare something under oath, but their religion prohibits them from swearing an oath (responding positively to the question “Do you solemnly swear that the testimony you are about to give will be the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?” posed by the bailiff or whatever officer of the court does the swearing in). That being the case, the witness is asked to affirm it rather than swear they’ll do it. The Thought Co. website has a whole article about the difference. In either case, lying while giving testimony is the crime of perjury.

Now, an affirmation is kind of related to that, but it’s usually used in conjunction with saying good things about yourself to yourself. Things like “I can do it!” or “I’m getting better all the time!” or “I’m a real worthwhile human being!” can help you when you’re feeling like you can’t do it, or you’re getting worse, or you’re a waste of space. Those are positive affirmations, the only kind you should give yourself.

And that’s all I got.

Stream of Consciousness Saturday is brought to you by Linda Hill and this station. Now here’s Hee Haw Honey Misty Rowe for WDZL, channel 39.

WDZL is now WSFL, the CW affiliate in Miami-Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
