#1LinerWeds From Deputy Barney Fife

It’s my opinion that Don Knotts, who played Barney Fife on The Andy Griffith Show and Ralph Furley on Three’s Company (not to mention hundreds of other roles in movies and on TV), is the funniest man God ever put on Earth. We’ve been watching reruns of Andy every weeknight, and despite the shows being over 50 years old and the fact that we’ve seen them hundreds of times before, they’re still hilarious, and Knotts’ “Barney” is a huge reason for that. Here’s a montage of him using one of his favorite catchphrases…

One-Liner Wednesday is brought to you each week by Linda Hill and this station. And, as luck would have it, here’s Andy Griffith for Post Toasties cereal! (Seriously, it was the next commercial on the reel…)

  1. When I was younger, I didn’t like Barney Fife one bit. Now, I realize it’s because he was such a believable actor and I can appreciate the silliness.

    1. He didn’t always say it, which is what made it so funny when he did. It was a great show, especially after Andy decided he would be everyone’s straight man.

    1. Tim Conway was a riot. I always loved it when he’d get everyone on the Carol Burnett set laughing, usually by leaving the script behind and improvising something. He’s another one.

    1. You wonder what might happen if they were to schedule it on one of the networks today. Is it really only people from our generation that would watch it, or might millennials enjoy it as well? I love it, and while it projected the image of a world that was a little too perfect and homogeneous, it would be a great place to live.

  2. Barney was probably my favorite of his roles. When we think of Barney, we think of how funny he was, but that role gave him a lot of emotional range. Barney made us cry, too. Thanks for the memories.

    1. Yeah, there were times that things would knock the swagger out of him, and a few times when I’m sure he just wanted to crawl under a rock and die. It was always heartening to see Andy help him recover his dignity.

  3. Yes, he was a pretty funny fellow all right. Loved The Ghost and Mr. Chicken. Andy put too much milk in his cereal for my taste. I like my cereal crunchy.
