Song Lyric Sunday: “Minute By Minute”

As always, I see the prompt and songs just start springing out at me. This was the first one that crossed my mind, and even if someone else has it, I really don’t mind. I like this one.

Shortly after Donald Fagen and Walter Becker decided that Steely Dan would be a recording band only, guitarist Jeff “Skunk” Baxter (as I remember an article about Steely Dan in Circus magazine circa 1973, Baxter earned this sobriquet because he never changed his socks) joined The Doobie Brothers in 1974. Then, Tom Johnston, the Doobs’ vocalist, came down with a stomach ailment in 1975 and the band invited Michael McDonald, who had sung on several Steely Dan albums (Katy Lied, The Royal Scam, and Aja), was invited to become a temporary Doobie Brother, and they liked him so much they asked him to stay. It was around that time that The Doobie Brothers started sounding a lot like Steely Dan…

But anyway, “Minute By Minute” was written by McDonald along with Lester Abrams, and it was the title track from their 1978 album.

The lyrics are brought to us by MetroLyrics

Hey, don’t worry, I’ve been lied to
I’ve been here many times before
Girl, don’t you worry, I know where I stand
I don’t need this love, I don’t need your hand
I know I could turn, blink, and you’d be gone
Then I must be prepared any time to carry on

But minute by minute by minute by minute
I keep holding on
Oh, minute by minute by minute by minute
I keep holding on

You will stay just to watch me, darlin’
Wilt away on lies from you
Can’t stop the habit of livin’ on the run
I take it all for granted like you’re the only one
Livin’ on my own
Somehow that sounds nice
You think I’m your fool
Well, you may just be right

‘Cause minute by minute by minute by minute
I keep holding on
Oh, minute by minute by minute by minute
I keep holding on

Call my name and I’ll be gone
You’ll reach out and I won’t be there
Just my luck you’ll realize
You should spend your life with someone
You could spend your life with someone

Minute by minute by minute by minute
I’ll be holding on
Oh, minute by minute by minute by minute
I’ll be holding on…

Personally, I prefer the instrumental version done by Larry Carlton on his 1987 release Discovery, but ain’t no lyrics on that one.

That’s Song Lyric Sunday for March 24, 2019.

  1. Love this song and love the Doobie Brothers. I was a big Tom Johnston fan. As far as songs, “South City Midnight Lady” is one of my favorites.
