Song Lyric Sunday: “Nocturnal”

So Jim comes up with this as a prompt for today:

Dawn/Noon/Dusk/Midnight/Nocturnal/Diurnal

And, of course, I had nothing, so I picked one of the prompts, “nocturnal” and searched YouTube for it. And I found something! An actual song named “Nocturnal”! And, I listened to it, and realized, it’s in Spanish!

Well, I wasn’t going to let that stop me, because, let’s face it, it was a really pretty song, even though I had no idea what he was singing. So I decided to use the song and run the lyrics through Google Translate.

First, some information about the singer, Pedro Infante, courtesy of Wikipedia:

Pedro Infante Cruz was a Mexican actor and singer. Hailed as one of the greatest actors of the Golden Age of Mexican cinema, he is considered an idol among Latin American people. He along with Jorge Negrete and Javier Solís were styled as the Tres Gallos Mexicanos (“Three Mexican Roosters”). Infante was born in Mazatlán, Sinaloa [18 November 1917], but raised in nearby Guamúchil. He died on 15 April 1957 in Mérida, Yucatán, in a plane crash during a flight en route to Mexico City, after an engine failed on takeoff. His remains were later identified by a bracelet found. His film career began in 1939 with him appearing in more than 60 films – 30 of them with his brother Ángel Infante, and starting in 1943 he recorded about 350 songs. For his performance in the movie Tizoc, he was awarded the Silver Bear for Best Actor at the 7th Berlin International Film Festival.

The song was written by J. S. Marroquin and J. Mojica, and that’s all I can say about it.

The Spanish Lyrics, from Genius:

A través de las palmas
Que duermen tranquilas
La luna de plata
Se arrulla en el mar tropical
Y mis brazos se extienden
Hambrientos en busca de ti
En la noche un perfume de flores evoca
Tu aliento embriagante
Y el dulce besar de tu boca
Y mis labios esperan sedientos
Un beso de ti
Siento que estas junto a mí
Pero es mentira es ilusión

Ah, ah, ah

Y así paso las horas
Paso las noches
Pidiendo a la vida el milagro
De estar junto a ti
Y tal vez ni si quiera
En tus sueños
Te acuerdes de mí

The English translation, thanks to Google Translate:

Through the palms
Who sleep peacefully
The silver moon
Lulls in the tropical sea
And my arms extend
Hungry in search of you
In the evening a perfume of flowers evokes
Your intoxicating breath
And the sweet kiss of your mouth
And my lips wait thirsty
A kiss from you
I feel you are next to me
But it’s a lie is illusion

Ah, ah, ah

And so I spend the hours
I spend the nights
Calling to life the miracle
To be with you
And maybe not even
In your dreams
Do you remember me

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday for May 19, 2019.

  1. Nice one, and thanks for the English words. This video reminds me of watching Desi Arnaz on ‘I Love Lucy’ performing at the Tropicana supper club. 🙂
