BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Do It Again”

Did you ever notice that there are songs that have the same title but are completely different songs? In this battle, we’re going to take a look and a listen to three songs that share the title “Do It Again.”

Steely Dan

From their 1972 album Can’t Buy A Thrill, this was the first single and it reached #6 on the Hot 100, #7 on the Cash Box survey and #8 on the Record World survey.

The Kinks

The Kinks recorded their “Do It Again” on their 1984 album Word of Mouth. It did reasonably well on the Hot 100 and Mainstream Rock charts.

The Beach Boys

The Beach Boys’ “Do It Again” was a non-album single that was released two weeks after their 1968 album Friends. Surprisingly, it only reached #20.

I think you know the drill by now:

  1. Listen to all three songs.
  2. Decide which you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Saturday, June 8, so be sure and get your vote in by then. Remember, you don’t need to participate in Battle of the Bands to vote.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Steely Dan, The Kinks and The Beach Boys!

  1. I got excited when I saw your title because I knew MY song was going to be there. I have to vote for The Beach Boys. I loved that song and my boyfriend used the title as a corny way to get his first kiss. Corny, but it worked and is one of my fondest coming of age memories. ( I really like all three songs so a vote would have been hard for me given any other circumstances.) Thanks, John.

  2. I’m back! Crazy week and this week will be the same. Anyhoo, love all 3 songs but my heart belongs to Steely Dan because of the great guitar playing and the blues vibe. Now I see a spider on the ceiling and I am going to run.

  3. Oh, damn, JOHN!

When I saw your BOTB title, my first thought was “Steely Dan”. My second thought was: If he uses the original in the Battle, rather than just two covers of it, there’s no question I’m voting for Steely Dan.

Then I came here and saw The Dan as the first group. Bingo! Easy “bote” this time. But then I read about the concept you were using, scrolled down and saw… my BOYS.

Man, I have ALWAYS loved ‘Do It Again’ by The Beach Boys. And having grown up on the same beaches that The Boys did, I can absolutely relate to the sentiment of the song… reminiscing, going back to the childhood playground. And that beat, that melody, those beautiful sun-drenched harmonies…

I’d grade ‘Do It Again’ by The Dan an “A”.
But I grade ‘Do It Again’ by THE BOYS an “A+”.

Sorry, Kinks, but you never even had a chance.

  4. I remember them all and like all of these songs and all of these groups.

But the song that sticks with me the most is Steely Dan’s “Do It Again”. I still remember seeing them perform it on Midnight Special and it blew me away. Been a big Dan fan ever since.

    A vote for Steely Dan.

  5. John,

I’m so glad you mentioned straight off that you’re running a battle with three different songs with the same title. It’s just been a crazy week and it’s on Tuesday. I’m having a lot of weeks like this lately. I’m giving my vote to Steely Dan. Have a great week, my friend!
