BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Do It Again” Results

So, last time I decided to give you three different songs, all of which were named “Do It Again,” and have you choose the one you liked the best. The contestants were Steely Dan, The Kinks, and The Beach Boys. Unfortunately for Ray Davies and crew, The “Do It Again” by The Kinks got no votes. Sorry guys, better luck next time.

So that left Steely Dan and The Beach Boys in a battle between East and West Coast. I knew The Beach Boys would get at least one vote (from Stephen, who did not disappoint), which would keep them from getting shut out. Still, the result was pretty much decisive:

Steely Dan: 8

The Beach Boys: 2

Congratulations to Steely Dan (essentially Donald Fagen, since Walter Becker passed away in 2017) and a hearty “well done” to The Beach Boys.

My next Battle of the Bands will be next Saturday, June 15, so be sure and stop by then!

Yeah, my vote was fairly predictable. One doesn’t need to be a Magic 8-Ball (or even a “Sikike Phteven”) to guess that my vote will go to The Beach Boys. I could probably imagine a few scenarios when I might vote for another artist over The Beach Boys in a BOTB contest, but they would be very rare circumstances.

I feel The Boys should have fared much better in this Battle. But, the Steely Dan recording was a major radio hit, and hits almost never lose in BOTB. Over time, I have become completely convinced that the “Familiarity Factor” is a nearly insurmountable deciding element in BOTB.

      1. Yip! That (bad) psychic, too.

I often wondered if anyone (other than Birgit) was getting the connection between ‘The Amazing Sixwell’ and ‘The Prisoner’. The photo was a dead giveaway, but I’m not sure how many folks were even aware of ‘The Prisoner’ to begin with. I’m guessing you were. But then I’ve guessed wrong before, too.

        1. I watched Patrick McGoohan in “Secret Agent” (aka “Danger Man” in the UK) in the ’60’s when it was broadcast on one of the networks, and “The Prisoner” in the late ’70’s when WTTW would run it on Sunday nights after “Monty Python.” A fine actor and director (he directed several episodes of “Columbo” and was the bad guy in a few).

There were some excellent “spy” shows coming out of England in the ’60’s: “Secret Agent,” “The Prisoner,” “The Avengers,” and “The Saint.” Wonder if there’s a station that shows all of them? It’d be fantastic if one of the vintage TV channels showed them…

  2. In my book Steely Dan is pretty hard to beat, but I’d say the same about The Kinks and the Beach Boys. These were all high quality song choices. Excellent Battle!
