Song Lyric Sunday EXTRA: “26 Miles (Santa Catalina)”

I knew that if I asked my readers that someone would know! In my recent SLS post, I used “Sh-Boom” by The Crew-Cuts and said that there was another song that sounded just like it, but I couldn’t think of the name. Well, Maggie, who blogs over at From Cave Walls, came up with the answer…

“26 Miles (Santa Catalina)” was written by Bruce Belland and Glen Larson (who went on to write and produce TV shows such as BJ and the Bear, Magnum, P.I., and Battlestar Galactica) when they were at Hollywood High School and members of the singing group The Four Preps. The song reached #2 on the Hot 100 and #6 on the R&B chart in 1958.

The lyrics are in the video, but here they are acccording to Songlyrics.com:

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance

Water all around it everywhere
Tropical trees and the salty air
But for me the thing that’s a-waitin’ there-romance

It seems so distant, twenty-six miles away
Restin’ in the water serene
I’d work for anyone, even the Navy
Who would float me to my island dream

Twenty- six miles, so near yet far
I’d swim with just some water-wings and my guitar
I could leave the wings but I’ll need the guitar
for romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance

A tropical heaven out in the ocean
Covered with trees and girls
If I have to swim, I’ll do it forever
Till I’m gazin’ on those island pearls

Forty kilometers in a leaky old boat
Any old thing that’ll stay afloat
When we arrive we’ll all promote romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me
Santa Catalina, the island of romance, romance, romance, romance

Twenty- six miles across the sea
Santa Catalina is a-waitin’ for me

Thanks again, Maggie!

    1. This is the one I wanted to post, but couldn’t remember it. Thankfully, Maggie knew which one I was thinking of. I think I used it once before, when we were choosing songs with units of measure in the title.

  1. Ahhhhh….one of my favorite places! And on a clear day we could see Catalina Island from my favorite beach spot – Laguna. And here I am now, earthbound in the middle of Texas. I sure miss my ocean!
