Everybody sing!
Once upon a time there was an engineer,
Choo-Choo Charlie was his name, we hear,
He had an engine and he sure had fun
He used Good & Plenty candy to make his train run!
(Charlie says) Love my Good & Plenty!
(Charlie says) Really rings a bell! DING!
(Charlie says) Love my Good & Plenty,
Don’t know any other candy that I love so well!
He ran for class president on the platform “A vote for Good & Plenty is a vote for me!”
If you’ve never had the pleasure of having Good & Plenty, they were little capsule-shaped pieces of licorice wrapped in pink or white candy shells. Don’t like licorice? (Good, more for me!) They also made Good & Fruity, which were along the same lines but fruit flavored, and a lot chewier…
And, as you probably surmised, when you shake the box over and over, it sounds like a train, as demonstrated in this 1984 commercial by, among others, Jason Alexander.
Stream of Consciousness Saturday is brought to you each week by Linda Hill and this station. Now a word from AMF, makers of the Impact KE-21 bowling ball. It’s almost unfair!
Bet you thought you weren’t going to get a commercial this week. HA! You got five!
Good & Plenty are delicious and no one else here eats them! 😉 I do love the song, too!

I don’t know why so many people hate licorice. I love it.

Great commercials and I love Good and Plenty, especially the licorice flavored ones. We went to a general store while visiting Blue Ridge, Ga during St. Patty’s Day and they had Black Jack chewing gum. Love it!

They bring Black Jack, Clove, and Beemans gums back every once in a while, and it’s possible you can find them at one of the nostalgia candy websites. I wish they’d reissue Cinnamint and Teaberry, and I remember one called Fan Tan that tasted pretty good. And who can forget Choward’s violet-flavored gum?

I liked all of these but I’ve never had Choward’s violet-flavored gum!

Can’t find Smith Brothers Licorice around here anymore! I like Good and Plenty but not so much the Good and Fruity. I like to suck on them until all that’s left is the licorice. Happy Saturday!

A quick check indicated you can still get Smith Brothers licorice at Amazon and at Drugs.com, but the website only talks about cherry, honey and lemon, and “warm apple pie.” I guess the classic flavors are going out of style. I used to like the Luden’s Menthol ones, but again I need to go to Amazon for those. Such is life.

Love the song, love the memory, but never liked the candy. Tasted too much like my grandfather’s cough drops. Great take on the prompt.

Thanks! Did your grandfather like the Smith Brothers Licorice cough drops? I never realized it, but they were made in Chicago not far from where I lived. Small world…

Yes, John, those were the cough drops. I guess I am just not a fan of black licorice. That’s cool, though, that they were made nearby.

Definitely more for you. Ha ha! Though my dad loved them so we had them around the house sometimes.

My philosophy is that if it’s candy, I’ll eat it. I haven’t found one that I didn’t like…

I love this, John. What a delightful blast from the past. I love Good & Plenty, but I can’t eat them. They make my heart race. I have never tried Good & Fruity.

Good & Fruity are kind of like jelly beans. If you like jelly beans, you’ll like Good & Fruity.

They don’t make commercials like those anymore, and it’s regrettable.

The commercials are great, aren’t they? A lot of us bought them because of the commercial.
