BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Candyman”

So, I’m still on my “same title, different songs” kick (and this could go for a while). This round’s songs are both titled “Candyman.” Now, Roy Orbison had a song called “Candy Man,” as did Sammy Davis Jr. (from the 1971 version of Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, which was a whole lot better than Johnny Depp & The Chocolate Factory), and I immediately ruled those two out because I knew that Roy would wipe up the floor with Sammy and the two contestants I’ve chosen, and putting Sammy up against the two contestants would have seen him win big as well. Even now, I’m worried that this might end up not being a battle, but I’m going with it anyway.

Christina Aguilera

The New Mickey Mouse Club gave us Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Christina Aguilera, who I think gets lost in the shuffle. This appeared on her 2006 album Back To Basics and was written by her and Linda Perry.

Mary Jane Girls

Rick James formed The Mary Jane Girls as his backup singers in the late ’70’s, and later produced their two albums. This is from their 1983 self-titled debut, which was produced by James, who also wrote most of the songs on the album.

So, there are our contestants for this round. Here’s what I’d like you to do:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Thursday, August 22, so be sure and get your vote to me by then.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Christina Aguilera and The Mary Jane Girls!

  1. I love Christina and have the BACK TO BASICS CD. Although not my favourite track from it, it suited my ears much better than the disco-y Mary Jane Girls song. And, she’s SUCH a great singer!

  2. Christina Aguilera gets my vote all the way. I love her Andrews sisters take and the Rotor Rita poster take in the video. I actually have this CD that she made and it is quite good. The Mary Jane Girls is not my cup of tea and so Studio 54. Those outfits especially that oversized blue thing kills me

  3. You know, I’ve always sort of despised The Mary Jane Girls. Not my cup o’ tea. But I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Turns out…it was a wasted benefit.

So, Christine Aguilera actually had an edge. But, I did like her take on it!

By the way, I love when battles cause a stir, ha ha. Strong opinions make for a great battle.

  4. Kudos, JOHN!
When I saw the name Christina Aguilera I was all prepared to read you the riot act, for dragging BOTB down to that level. (Not that it hasn’t happened before, although I am too classy and too masculine to type the names Justin Timberlake and Justin Bieber – aka “The Justin Sisters”.)

But then I saw the name Rick James and thought: OK, there may be a way out of this.

And then I listened (and watched) with an open mind and – HOKEY-SMOKE! – I LOVED the tribute to The Andrews Sisters that Christina Aguilera & Company pulled off. That was GR-R-REAT! Musically terrific & visually terrific!

Then I hit “Play” on the Mary Jane Girls and got as far as 1:46 before I mashed down on the “Stop” button just as hard as I could. (Incidentally, the transvestite in black did not fool me.)

    >>… “Maybe this should be a matter of which song annoyed me most.”

And, John, we BOTBers are staging an ‘Intervention’ for Lee tonight at 8:30 at the ‘Ace Of Clubs’ club. Please don’t be late.

  5. Yikes! Maybe this should be a matter of which song annoyed me most. That would be the disco sound of the Mary Jane Girls. So by default that would leave Christine Aguilera’s Boogie Woogie as my preference. There was some good musicianship in that one.

I would imagine that Christine will run away with the votes on this match.
