BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Cherish”

Third time’s a charm, right? We’re going to do the “same name, different songs” thing again, only this time we have two songs that were Top 10 hits about 20 years apart. The name of the song in either case is “Cherish,” and here are the contestants.

Kool & The Gang

Released in 1985, the third song from the band’s 1984 album Emergency, this song was a #1 hit on the Adult Contemporary chart six weeks running and was certified Gold by RIAA.

The Association

From their 1966 album And Then… Along Comes The Association, this was a #1 hit on the Hot 100 for three weeks and ultimately was named the #2 song for the year.

You probably know what to do by now, but here are the instructions in case you’re new to this:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

Remember, you can vote in this battle whether or not you have a battle of your own. All you need are at least one good ear and your opinion.

I’ll announce the winner next Sunday, September 22, so be sure and get your vote to me by then.

The lines are now open. Good luck to Kool & The Gang and The Association!

At first, I assumed I would not know the Kool & The Gang song because by ’85, I had given up on contemporary Rock / Pop and was listening mostly to Blues and my old favorites. But I guess that was such a big hit that I learned it by osmosis, because I definitely know that song.

Both songs are pretty saccharine sweet but the one by THE ASSOCIATION is also quite pretty with some lovely harmonizing. About the best thing I can say for the Kool recording is that… it’s not Rancid.

  2. John,

I thought this was going to be a bit hard for me but after listening to both of these great songs I’m going with Kool & the Gang. I have a strong feeling associated with this song for some reason but no matter how this showdown plays out, I like both songs a lot! Great battle. I’m back on board with the BoTB again. When you get a chance, cast your ballot in my Stairway To Heaven Showdown. Have a good day, my friend!

  3. This is a tough match. I really love both songs. The retro me wants to go with The Association, but the current me really gets more out of the lyrics from Kool and the Gang, so I am throwing my vote that way.

  4. I really like the Kool and the Gang song but the Association brings me back to my youth. I can remember singing it in my bedroom and thinking about the guy I was crushing on. I was in grammar school. Have to go with those memories. Association for me too.

  5. I was a big fan of The Association when they came on the scene and their song “Cherish” was certainly a favorite with me as it was and is with so many other folks I’d say. It still holds up today–it’s a classic!

As I have related in previous posts on my own blog, the song “Cherish” by Kool & the Gang is one that I count among my all time favorites. This song almost puts me at least on the verge of tears when I hear it. For me there are a lot of memories–good and bittersweet–listening to this song. It’s a great tune.

But now, putting these two songs side by side, I think I have to give my vote to The Association . Their song lyrics and music have a greater complexity and depth I think.

This is such a tough match considering these are both favorite songs of mine. Way to go, John!
