I love this song too much to try and pick something a little more obscure. Jim’s prompt for today is “Floor/House/Roof/Walls” and my choice is “Our House” by the British band Madness. Written by band members Chris Foreman and Cathal Smyth, it was on their 1982 album The Rise & Fall and became a Top 10 hit internationally, including #7 in the US.
Lyrics from MetroLyrics:
Mother’s tired she needs a rest
The kids are playing up downstairs
Sister’s sighing in her sleep
Brother’s got a date to keep
He can’t hang around
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our
Our house it has a crowd
There’s always something happening
And it’s usually quite loud
Our mum she’s so house-proud
Nothing ever slows her down
And a mess is not allowed
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our …
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our …
Father gets up late for work
Mother has to iron his shirt
Then she sends the kids to school
Sees them off with a small kiss
She’s the one they’re going to miss
In lots of ways
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our …
I remember way back then when everything was true and when
We would have such a very good time such a fine time
Such a happy time
And I remember how we’d play simply waste the day away
Then we’d say nothing would come between us two dreamers
Father wears his Sunday best
Mother’s tired she needs a rest
The kids are playing up downstairs
Sister’s sighing in her sleep
Brother’s got a date to keep
He can’t hang around
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our …
Our house, was our castle and our keep
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, that was where we used to sleep
Our house, in the middle of our street
Our house, in the middle of our street

Great song. I was thinking of the Crosby, Stills and Nash one by just the title. This one reminds me of the old MTV days. Happy Sunday!

I don’t like the CSNY version. This is the only one for me. I love the video.

When I saw the post title, I thought it was going to be the CSNY version. I wasn’t even aware of this. In any case, the CSNY version is stuck in my head.

Listen to this about a dozen times in a row. That’ll deal with the earworm.

I mentioned this on someone else’s blog but my brother loved this song. I even bought him the 12″ extended mix but he never listened to it. He was more into tapes!

A lot of people have forsaken their turntables and cassette decks (and even their CD players) in favor of streaming and downloading MP3’s. I know I have. Tapes are making a comeback, though. Maybe he can record off the 12-incher to a cassette…

That song brings back memories. It was one of the first music videos that I watched on VH1.

I don’t remember seeing this on TV. I knew the song but hadn’t seen the video until it showed up on YouTube, believe it or not.

John, not obscure enough! Hearing it twice is double goodness.

Hi John – Madness came into my consciousness in 2012 – when they played at the Diamond Jubilee celebrations in front of Buckingham Palace … loved it! Musically I pass … but they’ve caught my imagination – cheers Hilary

I just can’t picture a punk-rock band playing in front of Buckingham Palace. Was the Queen at home, or was she at Balmoral?
