Continuing with my “same name, different songs” theme, I picked a couple of songs that I had never heard before, which makes them perfect contestants. And here they are…

From their 2005 album Switch.

From their 1976 album Wind & Wuthering.

Your Turn!

I think you know what to do by now, but if you haven’t voted in one of these before, here are the instructions:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll announce the winner next Tuesday, October 8, so please be sure and get your vote to me by then. As a reminder, You don’t need to have a battle of your own to vote.

The lines are now open. Good luck to INXS and Genesis!

  1. Did not like either version very much – but genesis was
    Slightly better to me…
The INXS video was a little annoying with the girl on the bed scene – of course that was probably part of the songwriter’s afterglow but it seemed sophomoric in content

  2. Once again, two groups that I love!!

INXS was one of my very favorite concert experiences; they nailed every tune with a live performance “excellence” that a lot of group fail to deliver. Their encore was “Never Tear Us Apart” and my friend and I stood up and slow danced in the aisle…which caused a ton of people to follow our lead. I’ll never forget that!

    INXS gets my vote!

  3. I vote for INXS because it just is haunting and beautiful. I found it more unique that the Genesis version. That singer, who replaced the Late, great Michael Hutchence was so good but he did himself in fro: what I remember. He was living on the streets and made it big only to screw it up. A real shame.

  4. I always love Genesis, so my vote goes to them! Love Peter’s vocals. I used to think Phil and Peter were the same person when I was a kid. Hahaha.

  5. Genesis has got my vote! I love Genesis, and loved INXS back in the day. I haven’t made an effort to listen to any of their music since Michael Hutchence passed, but I am struck by how similar JD Fortune’s voice is to his. Still? Genesis.

  6. For me this is difficult because I like both songs a great deal. Great music!

In recent years I’ve become a big fan of the older Genesis (as well as the new). I went back and bought a lot of their older releases and have enjoyed discovering that music that I somehow bypassed when the albums were released. I appreciate the unique songwriting and performances of Genesis.

That being said, in this match I’m going to vote for INXS. Genesis does a great job and there’s nothing wrong with their song to my hearing, but I somehow seem to connect better with the “Afterglow” of INXS.

  7. JOHN ~

I hadn’t hear either song before.

It was nice to see in writing (on his arms) that the singer for INXS is a “human being”. I guess, if he ever gets a bit confused and isn’t entirely convinced, he can always just glance at his arms and reconfirm for himself that he’s not a monkey or a sheep or a giraffe.

Not that I have anything against “human beings”, but I’ll go ahead and bust up this pattern by voting for Genesis. (Because, “In the beginning, God…”.) ;oD

  8. I hadn’t heard either of them before and thought it was going to be Genesis for me all the way but I couldn’t even listen to the whole thing. INXS gets my vote. Nice one.
