Song Lyric Sunday: “Lost In Your Eyes”

Jim gave us “hide/seek/lost/found” as a prompt for today, and there are a bunch of songs that could fit this category. One song in paticular has been nagging at me, and although I’m sure someone else will use it, I’m going to use it anyway: Debbie Gibson’s “Lost In Your Eyes.”

“Lost In Your Eyes” was the first single off her second album, 1989’s Electric Youth, and when the dust finally settled, it had spent three weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100 and had become her best-selling single. The words and music are by Debbie, who wrote it in 1987, when she was 17. According to AZLyrics,

The singer told Billboard in 2014 about the live performances of this song, “From the opening two bars of the piano intro, it elicited screams from the audience. It had yet to be recorded or played on the radio, but it was already a hit. That’s not ego talking. It’s just true of any artist and any song that has that feeling of being familiar yet new.”

From 1989, Debbie Gibson, “Lost In Your Eyes.”

I get lost in your eyes
And I feel my spirits rise
And soar like the wind…
Is it love that I am in?

I get weak in a glance
Isn’t this what’s called romance?
And now I know
‘Cause when I’m lost I can let go

I don’t mind not knowing what I’m heading for
You can take me to the skies…
It’s like being lost in heaven
When I’m lost in your eyes

I just fell, don’t know why
Something’s there we can’t deny…
And when I first knew
Was when I first looked at you

And if I can’t find my way
If salvation is worlds away
Oh, I’ll be found
When I am lost in your eyes

I don’t mind not knowing what I’m heading for
You can take me to the skies…
Oh it’s like being lost in heaven
When I’m lost in your eyes

I get weak in a glance
Isn’t this what’s called romance?
Oh, I’ll be found
When I am lost in your eyes

In 2010, Debbie recorded a Japanese version of it for her Japanese release, Ms. Vocalist.

Thirty years later, she still sounds amazing.

That’s Song Lyric Sunday for October 27, 2019.

  1. Love this song, and I’ve liked lots of her songs. Such a pretty voice she has. We used to joke that my daughter could be her twin, they look so much alike. I liked her perfume, “Electric Youth”, too. The Japanese version was so good! 🙂

    1. Just to show you how things work: she was “frozen in time” to me, like she hadn’t aged since she recorded this song. It was a shock when I learned she’s pushing 50. Gorgeous voice, though…

  2. I don’t really care for this kind of music. I do see where it could be a BIG hit in Japan because these are the kind of songs they love to have on anime series and movies. She probably will do very well with it.

  3. I actually remember Debbie Gibson. When I was a little girl I remember really liking one of her songs. I don’t know if it was this one or not. But it was really nice listening to her.

    1. She does have a lovely voice. I never listened to her when she was popular, since I wasn’t a member of her demographic, but I liked this one, and would probably like some of her other songs.

  4. Good choices!

I like these as I force myself to put my phone down and think about the first song that pops in my head. For this, it was U2’s “I Still Havent’t Found….” but that’s too easy. Several minutes later, still on the “found” theme, I finally remembered a song from my college years…”Found Out About You” by Gin Blossoms. And now it’s stuck in my head!
