Song Lyric Sunday (And Song Of The Day): “Don’t Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man)”

Jim’s prompt for today is “Around/Down/Sideways/Up.” Funny thing: the other night, I had a dream where I and several others were singing this song. The song is The Serendipity Singers’ 1964 hit, “Don’t Let The Rain Come Down (Crooked Little Man).” Wikipedia tells us that it was based on the English nursery rhyme “There Was A Crooked Man,” and that it originally was done by Jimmie Rodgers as “Crooked Little House” on his 1960 album At Home with Jimmie Rodgers – An Evening of Folk Songs. The writing credits for the song were given to Ersel Hickey and Ed E. Miller on that album. The Serendipitys’ version was arranged by their leader, Bob Bowers, and two members, Bryan Sennett and John Madden. It rose to #2 on the Adult Contemporary chart and #6 on the Hot 100 (at WLS in Chicago, it topped the Silver Dollar Survey the week of April 17) in 1964. Not bad for a record released in the midst of Beatlemania and the early British Invasion.

The lyrics, courtest of Lyrics.com:

CHORUS
(Ah, ah) Oh, no, don’t let the rain come down
(Ah, ah) Oh, no, don’t let the rain come down
(Ah, ah) Oh, no, don’t let the rain come down
My roof’s got a hole in it and I might drown
Oh, yes, my roof’s got a hole in it and I might drown

There was a crooked man and he had a crooked smile
Had a crooked sixpence and he walked a crooked mile
Had a crooked cat and he had a crooked mouse
They all lived together in a crooked little house

CHORUS

Well, this crooked little man and his crooked little smile
Took his crooked sixpence and he walked a crooked mile
Bought some crooked nails and a crooked little bat
Tried to fix his roof with a rat-tat-tat-tat-tat

CHORUS

Now this crooked little man and his crooked cat and mouse
They all live together in a crooked little house
Has a crooked door with a crooked little latch
Has a crooked roof with a crooked little patch

CHORUS

CHORUS

(Ah, ah) Oh, no, don’t let the rain come down
(Ah, ah) Oh, no, don’t let the rain come down
(Ah, ah) Oh, no, don’t let the rain come down
My roof’s got a hole in it (my roof’s got a hole in it)
My roof’s got a hole in it and I might drown

So, that’s Song Lyric Sunday for November 3, 2019, and serves as today’s Song of the Day.

  1. I remember the nursery rhyme. I’m sure I’ve heard the song before too. Of course I never made any connection.
Reminds of me “put the lime in the coconut” not even close I know …
