Song of the Day: Tommy James & The Shondells, “Mony Mony”

Tommy James & The Shondells were from Niles, Michigan, and had seven Top 10 hits, two of which reached #1: “Hanky Panky” and “Crystal Blue Persuasions.” “Mony Mony” only reached #3 in the US, but #1 in the UK, and was covered by Billy Idol in 1981. His cover reached #1 in the US and #7 in the UK. According to Tommy James, he had written the whole song but needed a name like “Sloopy” or “Boney Maroney” to fill out the lyrics. They were in New York City when they looked out the window of their hotel and saw the sign above the Mutual of New York (MONY) Building, and the rest, as they say, is history.
