Song of the Day: Blood, Sweat & Tears, “And When I Die”

"And When I Die" was written by Laura Nyro and appeared on Blood, Sweat & Tears’s eponymous second album in 1968, perhaps their best-known and most commercial album. The song was the third single from the album, and it reached #2 on the Hot 100 in 1969.

  1. Oh my, this takes me to a table in a club in Vegas where I saw BS&T with Johnny Rivers at the young age of 16. I felt sorry for our waiter because it was the first time I had ever gone out on my own and I didn’t know about tipping. There was a two drink minimum and of course I couldn’t drink alcohol then so I just paid for the cokes my sister and I had without a tip.

    1. A lot of changing tempos and taking side trips into the Old West in this one. Laura Nyro herself did this one, and hers is a little more straightforward. Even so, it’s a unique song.
