I don’t know if we’re actually doing One-Liner Wednesday today, it being Christmas and all (I’m writing this last Saturday, in case you’re wondering), but I wanted to share this more-than-one liner from the 1947 film The Bishop’s Wife, which starred Cary Grant, David Niven, Loretta Young, and Monty Woolley. It’s the final scene, when the bishop (played by Niven) is giving his Christmas sermon, which was written by the angel Dudley (played by Grant), though no one knows that except Dudley (and his Boss).

One-Liner Wednesday is brought to you each week by Linda Hill and this station. Now a word from Norelco. Even our name says "Merry Christmas!"
From all of us here at The Sound of One Hand Typing, Merry Christmas!
I love this film despite the irritating Loretta Young whom I always want to slap. This is a real gem of a film that should be better known. I always loved that commercial too..so cute

I love the story, and the casting was superb (even if you don’t like Loretta Young). I might have mentioned somewhere that the daughter in this movie is played by the same girl who played the daughter in “It’s A Wonderful Life.” It definitely deserves more attention.

I know there are a lot of classic movies that I have missed or forgotten and this is one. Maybe I better start making a list! Thanks John. Hope you had a great day.

It was very quiet and stress-free, than heaven. I’d recommend “The Bishop’s Wife” without hesitation.

Nicely done, John. I think it might have been in 1971 that I gave my father a new Norelco razor for Christmas.

I wish I could find the even older Norelco ads, but Santa on the razor and “Noëlco – Even our name says Christmas” is a classic.

John,
We watched ‘The Bishop’s Wife’ a few years ago. It’s better than the remake by a long way. I don’t really remember a lot about the film, though. I’m thinking it was good but it didn’t knock my socks off. It might be nice to watch it again. Old movies always have such a good story plot and the acting is usually superb. This one has some excellent stars in it, too. Sending you belated Merry Christmas wishes, my friend!

I liked it much more than the remake with Whitney Houston and Denzel Washington (which was a pretty good film in its own right). That was more of a vehicle to demonstrate her considerable musical talent.

This is one of mine and my mom’s favorite movies.

Mine too, maybe my favorite. It’s overshadowed by “It’s A Wonderful Life,” which was made the year before and had greater star power. Interesting thing: the girl who played the Baileys’ daughter in “It’s A Wonderful Life” played the Broughams’ daughter in “The Bishop’s Wife.”

I’ve never heard of “the Bishop’s Wife” but just from the clip it sounds like a good one.

It shows up on Turner Classic Movies this time of year. You can also get it from YouTube Movies and most likely from Amazon. If you get a chance, it’s a tremendous movie.

I keep forgetting about this movie – it is a good one!

It gets nowhere near the attention that “It’s A Wonderful Life” gets, which is a real shame, because it tells a wonderful story about focusing on the right things. The acting is perfect in this one, too.
