Song of the Day: The Rascals, “People Got To Be Free”

"People Got To Be Free" was the #5 song for 1968, according to Billboard Magazine. It was written by Felix Cavaliere and Eddie Brigati and spent five weeks at #1 during the summer, as well as reaching #14 on the Black Singles chart. Considering the state of the world during 1968, it was a song with a badly-needed message.

  1. Back in 2013, the Rascals had a reunion on Broadway. I didn’t get to see the show, but then they went on tour and played Jones Beach, and we were lucky to get tickets. Floor seats. It was amazing.

In the 80’s Felix and Dino Danelli and Gene Cornish toured as “Felix Caviliere’s Rascals”, and when they played Long Island, my boyfriend Drew got to meet Dino and Gene when they were interviewed for a local paper.

    1. Great stuff. We had some amazing acts back in the day. Parents and grandparents need to make sure the kids know this music, because there aren’t many places you hear it anymore, unless you know what you’re looking for.
