I mentioned at the end of last year’s A to Z Challenge that my first foray into home computing was with a Sinclair ZX81. I was learning how to program in its asssembly language when suddenly all the support disappeared and I was left prettyy much holding the bag, so I gave up. One thing I remember was a pair of commands, PEEK and POKE. PEEK examined the contents of a byte, while POKE placed data into a byte. I think there were similar commands in just about everyone’s version of BASIC (the programming language almost all the personal computers used at the time, and it did pretty much the same thing.

We grew up watching The Three Stooges, much to the chagrin of our parents and teachers, who worried that we’d be slapping each other in the face, poking each other’s eyes out, and dragging saws across each other’s heads. We might have been dumb, but we weren’t that stupid. We knew they weren’t actually doing that. If you watch them doing an eye poke close enough, you can see that they’re hitting the victim in the forehead just above the eyes. Nevertheless, concerned parents all over the country got TV stations to stop running Three Stooges shorts in their after-school programs. WGN replaced Moe, Larry, and Curly with The Mickey Mouse Club.

  1. Every time I stop here on your blog, I feel like I’m transported back to my childhood. I still have my Pillsbury Doughboy doll and I used to be teased and poked at school that I looked like Annette. 🙂 LOL – nice job on the prompt, John!

    1. Joey was just saying that she had a stuffed Poppin’ Fresh and wondered where it went. (No, I don’t think you took it, just that the stuffed ones are as rare as hen’s teeth.)

They were paying you a compliment by saying you looked like Annette. She turned out to be quite a beauty not long after her Mickey Mouse Club days. She was really cute in her MMC days, come to think of it. I shudder to think how they would have exploited her on the new MMC

      1. Yep, I still have my little PF Guy. Do you think I could take a trip to the tropics if I sold it on Ebay? 😉
Aw, I hope it was a compliment. She was a cutie, that’s for sure! I never watched the newer version of the show.

      1. I’d say a lot of folks don’t even know what “poke salad” is. Once a friend of mine in Tennessee and I gathered some poke weed and fixed it up into sallet. It was pretty good. He got a kick out of me when I squished the poke berries into a juice that I rubbed all over my hands to make them a reddish color. As I recall, my hands stayed red for a couple of days.
