Share Your World for January 13, 2020

It’s time once again for Share Your World! Melanie B Cee has all the rules and pingbacks, in case you’d like to play along. Here are this week’s questions and answers:

  • What’s something your brain tries to make you do, which you have to will yourself NOT to do? A lot, but a big one is overeat. Maybe the biggest one, although Mary helps me keep it under control.
  • When someone finds out what you do, or where you are from, what question do they always ask you? No one’s asked me that in a while, mostly because (a) I’m retired and (b) I’ve lived here now more than half my life. Back in the mid-’80’s, when people would ask me what I did, and I told them I work with computers, they would start asking questions about why their Apple II was doing something, or what a message that came up on their TRS-80 meant. I had no idea, since I had never seen those machines before except in pictures and never actually sat and played with them, I couldn’t answer their questions. Finally I just told them I acted in porno movies. That stopped the questions.
  • What’s something terrifying that we’ve all come to accept as a fact of life? That thanks to the Internet there are people who we don’t know who know more about us than we know about ourselves.
  • Should governments make laws to protect people from harming themselves? As if it’s worked that well whenever they’ve tried it (e.g. Prohibition, the Drug War). They have no idea what they’re doing, and the frightening thing is that they think they do. They can hardly get done what they are supposed to do. And we get the bill for it.
  • Please share your gratitude for this past week in the form of a photo, a quote or a thought. How about a song? Neil Diamond, "Thank the Lord for the Nighttime."

See you in the funny papers!

  1. Thanks John for Sharing Your World!! Great song, I really admire Neil Diamond and have been a fan for many years, thanks for the refresh! 😀 I, too, LOL’d at “porn star”….I bet that got some reactions! Yes, it is a bit creepy that anything anyone cares to know about someone else is usually right there in some search engine’s servers.

    1. I like a lot of Neil Diamond’s earlier stuff, especially the songs he did on the Bang! label. Not that I don’t like everything else, but those are my faves.

I only did the pornstar thing once, to someone who was being especially annoying. It was a drastic move, I know, but I really was not in the most gregarious mood…

  2. It’s interesting how we worry about things we have no control over..oh wait…that’s what I do! My mom said I worry about things 5 years in advance. I love your answer about porn and I might use that. When I tell someone I am a credit counsellor, I don’t get questions so much as a a “Defense” from people saying, they only have 1 credit card and a loan. They start saying how they budget etc… like I will judge them from just looking at their face. What I do get is, after saying my name (closest is Beer-get but say get like git), they almost always ask, “What nationality is that?” I say, It’s German but also it’s Viking and even heard it’s Celtic. They also ask me what nationality I am and I always say I’m Canadian but have German descent and some Polish as well. One day, I really want to say, “I’m a drunkard.” You are so right about the internet and we live in a society where everyone knows so much. I couldn’t help but think of the age of nuclear war. “This is just a test…” I couldn’t agree with you more about laws to prevent people from harming themselves. I bet there are still laws in certain states that make it illegal to kill oneself like it used to be and I always thought that was dumb. The person is dead so how can they be arrested and, if not dead, they will make their life even worse by charging them? I just don’t get it. I love that song you chose and I think of my past week just thought of the word, grateful. 2 years ago on January 6th our pipes burst in our bathroom, on Jan15th my mom died and on the 26th I was in a car accident. This past week, nothing major happened and it’s just been a nice week overall.
