Thanks to Stephen T McCarthy for yet another idea. Knowing I’ve been doing these "same name, different song" pairings, he suggested this one, between two songs named "Sunday Morning" (more or less).
The Velvet Underground with Nico
The Velvet Undergroung with Nico did "Sunday Morning" on their eponymous 1967 album.
Spanky & Our Gang
According to the notes that accompany the video, ""Sunday Mornin’" written by Margo Guryan, recorded by Spanky and Our Gang, and released as a single by Mercury Records reached No. 30 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and #39 on the Billboard easy listening chart on February 10–17, 1968. It was included in The group’s second album, Like to Get to Know You, released in April 1968."
OK! Those are our contestants. Now, here’s what I’d like you to do:
- Listen to the two songs.
- Decide which song you like the best.
- Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
- Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:
- Stephen at STMcC Presents Battle of the Bands
- Arlee at Tossing It Out
- Mike at Mike’s Ramblings
- Cathy at Curious As A Cathy
- Mary B at Jingle Jangle Jungle
- Debbie at The Doglady’s Den
- Cherdo at Cherdo On The Flipside
- Ai at Ai Love Music
- Michele at Angels Bark
I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Wednesday, January 22, so be sure and cast your vote by then. And remember, anyone can vote!
The lines are now open! Good luck to The Velvet Underground with Nico and Spanky & Our Gang!

I prefer Spanky and the Gang which is more involved with the music and the vocals. The Velvet Underground put me to sleep.

Give my vote to The Velvet Underground! I’ve been a fan for a long time, and am not surprised that I prefer their laid-back psychedelia to the psychedelic pop of Spanky and Our Gang. And I know this isn’t a factor in the sound of the song and it didn’t influence my vote in the least, but the video that accompanies The Velvet Underground’s version is mesmerizing.

I’m going with Spanky and Our Gang. Their version has more zip.

I’ll give Spanky and Our Gang the vote, but I’m not a fan of this song. They are the better of the two, though,

I do like Velvet Underground, though this song might be one of their weaker songs, but they are no competition for the great Spanky and Our Gang. Give Spanky and Gang my vote.

I liked The Velvet Underground version. The instrumentals swayed me.

You’ve got a real competitive Battle going with this match-up, JOHN!
I like both of these songs. I owned the Velvet Underground song on LP back in the era of “Licorice Pizza”, and I STILL own the SPANKY & OUR GANG song of CD. That probably tells ya something.
Yip! My vote goes to Team Spanky. I have always loved their melodic songs and tremendous harmonizing. To me, they are like an even better version of The Mamas & The Papas (who were also wonderful).
I’m glad this Battle is a winner for ya, John.

Spanky and Our Gang. The Velvet Underground version lacks pep.

Sparky & Our Gang for sure. It is more melodic. I do not care for the creepy kind of whisper in the Velvet Underground with Nico.

Definitely the Velvet Underground with Nico. She reminds me a bit of Marlene Dietrich. Well, they were both German. 🙂

John,
I can’t say for sure that I know either of these ‘Sunday Morning’ songs but the artist I like best is Spanky & Gang. Cool idea. My battle is now open!

Oh there are so many songs called Sunday Morning but if I need to chose between those two my liking goes to The Velvet Underground. I used to wake up with this song on a Sunday as I made a whole playlist for that purpose only. So I chose from my nostalgic point of view.
