Yes, I got the memo: today’s theme is "duets," and there are five Temptations and three Supremes. But really, Eddie Kendricks from The Temptations and Diana Ross from The Supremes are the primary singers here, and even if Otis Williams speaks a line or two in the middle, it’s still essentially a duet. I’m going with it.
"I’m Gonna Make You Love Me" was written by Jerry Ross and Kenny Gamble; sometimes Leon Huff gets a credit, other times Jerry Williams does. It was originally done by Jay and the Techniques, and later by Dee Dee Warwick. This is probably the best-known version, taken from the 1968 album Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations, an album that reached #2 overall in the US and #1 on the R&B chart and in the UK. The single came out in 1969 and went to #2 on both the Hot 100 and R&B chart and #3 in the UK. As mentioned previously, Eddie Kendricks and Diana Ross do the duet, with the remaining Temptations (David Ruffin, Melvin Franklin, Otis Williams and Paul Williams) and Supremes (Florence Ballard and Cindy Birdsong) singing backup. The record was produced by Frank Wilson and Nickolas Ashford.
davidhertzberg1, who posted the song, also posted the lyrics:
Ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh ooh
(Eddie) I’m gonna do all the things for you
A girl wants a man to do, oh baby
I’ll sacrifice for you
I’ll even do wrong for you, oh baby
Every minute, every hour
I’m gonna shower you with love and affection
Look out it’s comin in your direction
And I’m gonna make you love me
oh, yes i will yes i will
i’m gonna make you love me
oh, yes i will yes i will
(Diana) Lookey here….
My love is strong you see
I know you’ll never get tired of me
Oh baby (sure won’t)
And…
I’m gonna use every trick in the book
I’ll try my best to get you hooked
Hey baby (Take me, I’m yours)
And every night, every day
I’m gonna say
Ii’m gonna get ya, I’m gonna get ya
Look out boy cause I’m gonna get ya
I’m gonna make you love me
Ooh yes I will,
Yes I will
I’m gonna make you love me
Ooh yes I will
Yes i will (You know I will)
(Diana) Every breath I take
And each and every step I make
Brings me closer baby, closer to you
(Otis) And with each beat of my heart
For every day we’re apart
I hunger for every wasted hour
(Eddie) ………..And oh
Every night
And every day
I’m gonna get ya, I’m gonna get ya
Look out cause
I’m gonna get ya
I’m gonna make you love me
Ooh yes I will,
Yes I will
I’m gonna make you love me
Ooh yes I will
And that’s Song Lyric Sunday (and Song of the Day) for January 26, 2020.
Wonderful song and I haven’t heard it in a long time. Thanks for the information on it – I never knew it was a duet between two groups. π

That was the cool thing about it. Any two people can do a duet, but two groups?

Now this is how a woman loves to be dealt with:). This is a great song and I always thought it was a duet and had no idea it was the 2 groups creating this song but, you are right, itβs a duet.

The other one I was considering was “Then Came You” by Dionne Warwick and The Spinners, but the one I chose is one of my favorites.

John, this may be one of the greatest duets ever sung. Their voices are pure heaven together, and those “backup singers.”

Two of the greatest R&B groups in history joining forces like that is hard to beat.

Such a pretty song. I think this is a duet, Supremes and Temptations are two groups, right?

I have always enjoyed Diana Ross and The Supremes, and the Motown Sound, as well. Great choice, John.
