Today is the feast of St. Blaise, who, legend has it, saved the life of a child who was choking on a fish bone by holding a pair of candles around the kid’s throat and saying a prayer, dislodging the bone and saving the kid’s life. In his honor, I give you Melanie Safka’s (who went by the mononym Melanie at the time) 1970 hit, "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)." It was her breakthrough hit in the US, reaching #6 on the Hot 100 and #3 on the Cash Box chart and finishing the year at #23. She’s joined by the Edwin Hawkins Singers.

I don’t know this song at all but love the psychedelic way of filming.

It was state of the art in 1970.

I think The Edwin Hawkins Singers really make this song. Their voices definitely lend an ethereal quality to it.

I cannot imagine what it must have been like to be on the stage at Woodstock. Great song – one I have not considered in ages.

I’ll bet it was quite an experience even for the experienced players.
