Song of the Day: Neil Diamond, “Red Red Wine”

I had never heard this song until UB40 did their version in 1988, and that was a re-release of a version they did in 1983. I had no idea Neil Diamond had written it until I was flipping through Wikipedia looking for something else and ran across it.

"Red Red Wine" was on his second studio album, 1967’s Just For You, on Bang records. Neil left Bang in 1968, but the old label continued to release singles by him, often adding orchestration or backing vocals without Neil’s knowledge or permission. The 1968 single reached #62 on the Hot 100. This version is from 2011’s The Bang Years: 1966-1968.

  1. I had no idea UB40 didn’t write the song. Have to admit I like their version better, but it could be because that’s the version I know well.

  2. What a discovery! I was under the impression that the original was by Tony Tribe.
What a strange song that doesn’t stick to the original artist.
