"Waterloo Sunset" is from The Kinks’ 1967 album Something Else By The Kinks. It was the first song by The Kinks to be released in stereo. It was written by Ray Davies and is one of the band’s best-known songs, ranking #42 on Rolling Stone magazines "500 Greatest Songs of All Time." It reached #2 in the UK and ws in the Top 10 in Australia, New Zealand, and most of Europe, but went nowhere in North America.

I really wasn’t familiar with it. Shame it never went anywhere in this country. I don’t even think they played it much on AOR stations.

Funny isn’t it, I think it’s one of their best, perhaps it was too English 💜

The Kinks were always a band that I liked, but I don’t recall this song. Guess I didn’t keep up with them that much.

It was apparently really popular everywhere but the US and Canada. It was the first I had heard of it.

John,
It occurred to me yesterday that you have a theme for your daily song picks this week, ‘Sunset’. Are you going for a song-a-day each week with a specific theme in mind or did it just work out this way? I don’t think I noticed this before now. Good song choice.

Yeah, I found that a theme really helps generate the ideas. Glad you like the song.

This is a really great song that I have never heard of since I am in North America and never bought many records that were rock music.

Without any question one of the greatest songs ever written and performed. Never fails to move. There’s an extensive tribute post on The Jukebox about this song.

When I used to work up in London, I used to commute into Waterloo Station each day!

Never got to Waterloo Station on our trip there many years ago. Sometimes I think we should have taken a day and just rode the Tube all day…
