For this round, we have three different songs named “Cherish,” one from the ’60’s, one from the mid ’80’s, and one from the late ’80’s. Let’s get into them now…

This was on The Material Girl’s 1989 album Like a Prayer. It was released as a single and peaked at #2 on the Hot 100 (behind Janet Jackson’s “Miss You Much”) and #1 on the ADult Contemporary chart in the US, and went to #1 on both the RPM Hot Singles and Adult Contemporary charts in Canada.

Kool & The Gang

This was the third single from Kool & The Gang’s 1984 album Emergency, released in 1985. It spent six weeks at #1 in the Adult Contemporary chart, was certified Gold, and it would ultimately become the biggest Adult Contemporary hit of the ’80’s.

The Association

This was released in 1966, spent three weeks at #1 on the Hot 100, and was the #2 song for the year. It also reched #1 in Canada.

So, there are our three contestants for this round. For those of you who may have forgotten what to do now or are doing this for the first time (anyone can vote), here are the instructions:

  1. Listen to the songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Sunday, March 8, so be sure and get your vote to me by then.

The lines are now open. Best of luck to Madonna, Kool & The Gang, and The Association!

  1. I Have to say I agree with Kim 100% I like Most of madonna’s and Cool and the Gang’s stuff but hands Down this battle goes to The Association !!

  2. While I like both Madonna and Kool and The Gang, I don’t really care for either of their “Cherish” songs. Give my vote to THE ASSOCIATION. It has that psychedelic sound I love so much from the 60s, so it blows the other two out of the water for me.

  3. The Association gets my vote because it seems timeless. Kool & The Gang is my second but it really harks to the fun times I had and good ole Madonna gets a distant 3rd..not my favourite of hers

  4. This is such a hard battle! I loooooooooooooove Madonna and Kool& the Gang, but my vote goes to Madonna. It is because I am in love with the album it came from. Like a Prayer has great songs, which includes my favorites “Dear Jessie”, beautiful “Oh Father”, and “Keep It Together”.

    Check out my battle!

  5. John,

My favorites are between the last two contenders. Madonna’s song didn’t do much for me. In the end, I decided to go with KOOL AND THE GANG. No particular reason, just liked their song a wee bit better over The Association. Nice battle!

  6. Imma gonna be the oddball here and say I like all of these songs, but not equally. Very clever combo, by the way.

Madonna always seemed a tad less tart-y than usual when crooning this time.

Kool & the Gang? Their version reminds me of dancing at the local clubs in my home town.

My vote goes to THE ASSOCIATION — another song that reminds me of my Dad listening to the radio on Sunday. We all liked this song. Nothing has changed!

  7. The difference between Madonna and the other two contestants is light beer vs. a wonderful porter. (I did enjoy the Madonna song but it was light and watery, if that makes any sense). I wish I could tie Kool and the Gang and the Association but the Association is a childhood favorite so, drumroll: The Association!

  8. JOHN ~

I gave Madonna exactly one minute and ten seconds… which I felt was being more than generous on my part.

But, hey, didn’t you already do a “Cherish” Battle between Kool & The Gang and The Association? Or did I merely dream that?

Either way, I’m STILL voting for THE ASSOCIATION. I don’t care how many times you do this match-up, or how many times I dream at night about this match-up, my vote is NOT going to change. I’m voting for THE ASSOCIATION… again… still… always… forever.

  9. Another hard choice. While I love the message of the Kool and the Gang one, overall my vote still goes to The Association…even though the bells sound slightly late (after the beat) to me. 🙂

  10. Some sense of deja vu going on in this Battle. I like all these songs–yes, even the Madonna one. “Cherish” by Kool and the Gang is one of my all-time sentimental favorite songs (or should I say one of my all=time favorite sentimental songs?).

But in this line-up of songs I’ve got to give my vote to the song by the Association. Still holds up after all of these years.
