Song Lyric Sunday/Song of the Day: Shirley Bassey, “Diamonds are Forever”

Our assignment today is “songs that use jewels or precious stones in the title or lyrics.” There were a couple of songs that I thought of, so I picked the one least likely to be chosen by anyone else. (Just in passing, maybe I should wait until everyone else has gone first, then toss mine out there. Hmm…)

1971’s James Bond movie Diamonds Are Forever was based on the 1956 book of the same name by Ian Fleming. It starred Sean Connery in the role of 007, after a one-film hiatus during which George Lazenby was less than impressive as Bond in 1969’s On Her Majesty’s Secret Service. The movie also starred Jill St. John, Charles Gray, Lana Wood, Jimmy Dean, and Bruce Cabot and was directed by Guy Hamilton. Music was written by John Barry and the lyrics for the title song were written by Don Black. Producer Harry Saltzman hated the song (thought the lyrics were loaded with innuendo), but Albert “Cubby” Broccoli wanted it in the film, so it stayed. It was sung by Dame Shirley Bassey, who had sung the theme for Goldfinger and would later sing the theme for Moonraker.

The lyrics are from AZLyrics:

Diamonds are forever,
They are all I need to please me,
They can stimulate and tease me,
They won’t leave in the night,
I’ve no fear that they might desert me.

Diamonds are forever,
Hold one up and then caress it,
Touch it, stroke it and undress it,
I can see ev’ry part,
Nothing hides in the heart to hurt me.
I don’t need love,
For what good will love do me?
Diamonds never lie to me,
For when love’s gone,
They’ll lustre on.

Diamonds are forever,
Sparkling round my little finger.
Unlike men, the diamonds linger;
Men are mere mortals who
Are not worth going to your grave for.
I don’t need love,
For what good will love do me?

Diamonds never lie to me,
For when love’s gone,
They’ll lustre on.
Diamonds are forever, forever, forever.
Diamonds are forever, forever, forever.
Forever and ever.

And that’s Song Lyric Sunday (and Song of the Day) for April 12, 2020.

      1. He came back for this one for a lot of money. He looks much older it was only four years after You Only Live Twice.
Yes I’m sure he has retired now…he is getting up there.

    1. YouTube is fantastic, isn’t it? I’ve probably done a couple hundred radio survey posts, and I’ve never not been able to find a song. And that includes the international ones. Dame Shirley appeared on hundreds of TV shows and there are probably clips from all of them there…

    1. Shirley’s real bright spot was “Goldfinger,” I think, but this and “Moonraker” are good, too. Funny thing: I always thought Connery was too old to play Bond, then I figured out he was at the right age. Must have been my perspective as a tween…

  1. She has an amazingly strong voice. I would choose, “Diamonds are a Girl’s Best Friend” famously sung by Marilyn Monroe in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. Happy Easter!

  2. Ahh the magnificent Shirley Bassey! I used to love watching her perform. Thanks John. I was sure you’d choose Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds so I avoided it 🤣 I hope someone chooses it today.
