BATTLE OF THE BANDS: “Do It Again”

I’m back! And still on a “Same Name, Different Song” kick. Today’s songs are both named “Do It Again.” Here are your contestants.

The Kinks

The Kinks’ “Do It Again” was the lead single off their 1984 album Word Of Mouth. It reached #4 on the Mainstream Rock chart in 1985.

Queens of the Stone Age

Queens of the Stone Age are a band that formed in 1996 in Palm Desert, California. Their “Do It Again” is off their 2002 album Songs For The Deaf.

So those are our contestants. Here are your instructions:

  1. Listen to the two songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the the winner next Friday, May 8, so be sure and get your vote to me before then. Remember, everybody can vote!

The lines are now open. Good luck to The Kinks and Queens of the Stone Age!

  1. Hey John, happy May! I hope you are doing well.

My vote goes to Queens of the Stone Age because this the rock I grew up when I was in middle/high school.

Come and check out my Battle about Mother’s Day when you have a chance.

  2. I thought for sure I’d be voting for SOTQA, as this particular album Dave Grohl played the drums on. But this song of theirs turned out to be a hot mess. The Kinks were a lot easier to listen to.

    My vote: The Kinks

‘Battle Of The Bands’: Do It Again.
    Literally, doing it again?

On your June 8, 2019, BOTB Results post, you told us:

    >>… So, last time I decided to give you three different songs, all of which were named “Do It Again,” and have you choose the one you liked the best. The contestants were Steely Dan, The Kinks, and The Beach Boys. Unfortunately for Ray Davies and crew, The “Do It Again” by The Kinks got no votes. Sorry guys, better luck next time.

I guess THIS Battle is that “next time” you mentioned?

And indeed, The Kinks are having better luck this time!

Heck, even I will vote for them this time, since they aren’t having to contend with The Beach Boys.

Recently, I had another one of your “Same Title, Different Songs” ideas pop into my mind. I figured I’d mention it to ya just in case you might want to run it as a BOTB installment someday. What adds an extra “kink” in this potential match-up is the fact that both song titles mean the same thing in English, but neither title is actually English:

Roisin Dubh (Black Rose) – Thin Lizzy

La Rosa Negra – (The Black Rose) – Gary Hoey

      1. JOHN ~

I actually thought perhaps you’d done it purposely, just to see if The Kinks could score a vote when the competition wasn’t quite at the Beach Boys / Steely Dan level.

You could-a played it off that way and I’d-a been none the wiser.

Oh, well, the song IS titled ‘Do It Again’, so… why not follow the instructions? 🙂

        1. Come to think of it, The Kinks were in the original battle and got zero votes. Maybe I should run them against Steely Dan, who won the first one…

  4. It is looking, like a slam dunk because I vote for The Kinks as well. The other one just sounds depressing and that background d riff is irritating after a couple of minutes

  5. Gosh, I hadn’t heard that Kinks song since the Stoned Age whereas I can’t recall ever having heard that Queens of the Stone Age song. Not particularly impressed by those California boys. Give my vote to the KInks–I’ve been enjoying their music since my day in junior high when they first emerged in the British Invasion.

    1. I purposely left that one out because I knew it’d probably wipe up the floor with the others. Of course, The Kinks are doing a number on Queens of the Stone Age… Maybe I’ll run Steely Dan against The Kinks next time…

  6. John,

The Kinks get my vote! Their song has a peppy vibe making me feel good this beautiful sunny Friday. Have a good weekend, my friend. It’s time to unwind after a busy, busy April A2Zing.
