Song of the Day: B. J. Thomas, “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry”

A Hank Williams song, but I figure it’s too early in the day to deal with his voice. Besides, I like B. J.’s voice and the way he did this. This was B. J.’s first single, from 1966, and it reached the Top 10 in the US (#8) and Canada (#2). Elvis said that this is the saddest song he had ever heard.

  1. I remember this song and even though sad, it’s a good song. They are allowing the reopening of many businesses in Georgia today. Maybe the loneliness for many will subside.

    1. I hope so. I think people are getting pretty well fed up with barricading themselves in their homes to protect themselves against a pathogen. I know I am.

  2. Wasn’t this done in a more rock n roll way but ballad like or was it Motown?. I don’t know but this is quite the sad song and works for some people right now. If they are already down, I don’t think this would be good:)

    1. Hank Williams did the original, and Elvis also covered it, but it was pretty slow regardless. There have been other covers, so it’s possible, I just haven’t heard one…

  3. Hi John – I don’t remember BJ … but it could almost be an Elvis song … and can see why Elvis thought it was sad. Unfortunately I feel a few people are feeling like this now – though hopefully people are reaching out to them. Take care – Hilary

    1. Elvis did cover it, as a matter of fact…

I hope we can put all this Covid-19 nonsense behind us and get back to more-or-less normal sooner rather than later. Being barricaded in our houses for a long time is not a good thing, physically, mentally, or emotionally.

  4. Oh my gosh, I remember that song. It’s awesome. I was in beauty school at the time and the girls & I would sing that in the back room while we were doing our mannequin head! hahahaha Have a great day!
