Song of the Day: Dennis Coffey, “Taurus”

Dennis Coffey was a member of The Funk Brothers, the house band at Motown Records, in the late ’60’s. He gave a hard-rock guitar sound to many of the classic hits of that period, including Edwin Starr’s “War” and Freda Payne’s “Band of Gold.” He went off on his own and formed The Detroit Guitar Band, who had a Top 10 single, “Scorpio,” that reached #6 in 1971. “Taurus” was the followup, reaching #18 in 1972. He hasn’t had a hit single since, but has continued to perform and record, releasing the album Down By The River in 2019.

    1. He also did “Scorpio,” which was his big single. Oh, and if you’re into classical music parodies, Peter Schickele (aka PDQ Bach) had something years ago called “Twelve Heavenly Tunes,” one for each sign of the Zodiac, but I can’t remember if it was an album by itself or a portion of one…
