Jim has assigned us the prompt words “end, finish, over, stop” for today’s edition of Song Lyric Sunday. I came up with two that I liked just about the same and couldn’t decide between them. So I’m going to do both.
First up is Chris Rea’s “Fool (If You Think It’s Over).” It’s from his debut album, 1978’s Whatever Happened To Benny Santini? Chris wrote the words and music, and as a single, it readched #12 on the Hot 100, #10 on the Cash Box Top 100, and #1 on Billboard‘s Easy Listening chart. In Canada, it wernt to #15 on the RPM Top Singles chart and #1 on RPM‘s Adult Oriented playlist. The single also earned him a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist in 1979.
The lyrics are from AZLyrics:
Who could love and do that to you
All dressed in black, he won’t be coming back
Save your tears, you’ve got years and years
The pains of seventeen’s
Unreal they’re only dreams
Save your crying for the day
Fool if you think it’s over
‘Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it’s over
I’ll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
You’re a fool if you think it’s over
It’s just begun
Miss teenage dream, such a tragic scene
he knocked your crown and ran away
First wound of pride and how you cried and cried
But save your tears you’ve got years and years
Fool if you think it’s over
‘Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it’s over
I’ll tell you why
New born eyes always cry with pain
At the first look at the morning sun
You’re a fool if you think it’s over
It’s just begun
I’ll buy your first good wine
We’ll have a real good time
Save your crying for the day
That may not come but anyone
Who had to pay would laugh at you and say
Fool if you think it’s over
‘Cos you said goodbye
Fool if you think it’s over
I’ll tell you why
Today’s second song is The Hollies’ “Stop! Stop! Stop!” It was written by the band’s Allen Clarke, Tony Hicks, and Graham Nash as a rewrite of a previous song and included on their 1966 UK album For Certain Because. It was a Top 10 hit worldwide, including #7 in the US, #2 in the UK, and #1 in Canada.
The lyrics, once again from AZLyrics:
Entering through the door
Ruby glistening from her navel
Shimmering around the floor
Bells on feet go ting-a ling-a linging
Going through my head
Sweat is falling just-a like-a tear drops
Running from her head
Now she’s dancing, going through the movements
Swaying to and fro
Body moving, bringing back a memory
Thoughts of long ago
Blood is rushing, temperature is rising
Sweating from my brow
Like a snake, her body fascinates me
I can’t look away now
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Give me time to breathe
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Or I’ll have to leave
Now she’s moving all around the tables
Luring all in sight
But I know that she cannot see me
Hidden by the light
Closer, closer, she is getting nearer
Soon she’ll be in reach
As I enter into a spotlight
She stands lost for speech
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Give me time to breathe
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Or I’ll have to leave
[Break]
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Give me time to breathe
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Or I’ll have to leave
Now I hold her, people are staring
Don’t know what to think
And we struggle knocking over tables
Spilling all the drinks
Can’t they understand that I want her
Happens every week
Heavy hand upon my collar
Throws me in the street
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Give me time to breathe
Stop, stop, stop all the dancing
Or I’ll have to leave
And that’s Song Lyric Sunday and Song of the Day for May 24, 2020.
What a nice song! I have never heard this tune before but love it!

You don’t hear it that often anymore. Kind of a shame, really.

When Chris Rea’s song came out, I was working nights and didn’t hear it until it was a Golden Oldie a couple of years later. The Hollies, on the other hand, I thought a lot of people would think of that one, so I was hesitant to include it, but it was too much fun…

He’s done some great songs. My favorite is “On The Beach.” There’s a lot of jazz harmony in that one. He’s doing a lot of blues now. I should exploe him further…

Blues? Really? I’ll have to check him out more too. Thanks!

I don’t remember the Hollies song but once I heard the chorus I remembered “Fool If You Think It’s Over.” Nice ones, John. Happy Sunday.

I’m surprised you don’t remember The Hollies’ song. It’s probably been a long time since you’ve heard it.

I have no clue about the first song but I know the second one well and love the instruments used

“Stop Stop Stop” was almost psychedelic with the banjo and the way they processed the sound. It was really different for the times.

The Chris Rea song Fool (If You Think Itβs Over) was nice to hear again and a great song to end the 70’s with.

It was a perfect example of “yacht rock,” which was ascending as disco was descending.

Thanks! Sometimes the prompts are a little more difficult, but this was easy.

Oh wow …
That first song, I always liked it but never really listened to the lyrics.
That Hollies song ..,the censors actually allowed it?

There wasn’t anything particularly obscene about “Stop Stop Stop.” I guess they went to a Turkish restaurant that had a belly dancer that they all fell in love with. They did a good job of “laying it between the lines.”
