Song of the Day: The Bangles, “Walk Like An Egyptian”

I’m just picking songs at random this week, because why not… My roommate in college would occasionally get in a mood where he’d walk like an Egyptian. He was really good at it, too: had the arm movements and the head motion and everything. Ten years later, The Bangles came out with their song, and it became quite the thing to do. My roommate did it better than anyone in the video… but The Bangles had a bona fide hit with this in 1986, reaching #1 in the US, Australia, and Canada and the Top 10 in most of the rest of the world, and giving everyone something to do at weddings.

  1. I use this track as a warm up when I’m teaching exercise classes. If I actually try to walk like an Egyptian, the class just stare and carry on with their star jumps… I have fun though πŸ™‚

  2. Hi John – it’s a fun song … and has been used many times as dance specials … take care – Hilary

  3. I did like it but I like a lot of their other songs… I mean…Susanna Hoffs with a Rickenbacker…it doesn’t get much better than that.

  4. I just heard this song on Sunday and love it..always did. I danced many a time and could move my neck like that. My friends got a kick out of it

  5. Another one that’s on my playlist. This one was also on a playlist I called “Work Noise” – the one I turned to to drown out the sounds in the office.

  6. Total classic. The Hub and I both love it, but the Barbarians not so much. Maybe because the Hub and I always belt it out and try to walk like an Egyptian along with the song, lol.
