Back a little later this week! This time, I have three songs named “Gypsy Woman” for you to listen to.

Muddy Waters

Muddy recorded this song on his 1973 album Can’t Get No Grindin’ and called it “Mother’s Bad Luck Child.” I think he did that to see if anyone was paying attention. Either that or he forgot he had written this one. From 1948, featuring Sunnyland Slim on piano.

The Impressions

Written by Curtis Mayfield and recorded by The Impressions in 1961, the song reached #2 on the R&B chart, #20 on the Hot 100, and #17 on the Cash Box chart. Brian Hyland covered it in 1970 and took it to #3 on the Hot 100.

Ricky Nelson

The B side of his 1963 single “String Along,” it failed to reach the Top 40 on its own, coming in at #62 on the Hot 100.

So there are our three contestants. Here are your instructions:

  1. Listen to the three songs.
  2. Decide which song you like the best.
  3. Vote for your favorite by leaving me a comment with your choice. If you feel like telling us why, feel free.
  4. Then, visit the other participants and vote in their Battles:

I’ll tally the votes and announce the winner next Wednesday, April 22, so be sure and cast your vote by then.

The lines are now open. Best of luck to Muddy Waters, The Impressions, and Ricky Nelson!

  1. This was very close call..very close but I am going for Muddy Waters because I love the blues style and that piano. Ricky was a very close second

  2. JOHN ~

Even though Ricky Nelson is one of my very favorite ’50s rockers (probably second or third after Eddie Cochran and maybe Chuck Berry), I figured I’d be voting for Muddy Waters. And YOU probably figured I would be, too – amiright?

But, as Gomer Pyle used to say, “Suhprahze, suhprahze, suhprahze!!!!” Although I DID like ALL THREE of these songs, I’m actually voting for THE IMPRESSIONS.

And this is why BOTB will never get old. It’s just too full of “suhprahzes”.

  3. Kind of weird how the Muddy Waters song got a different name later on. Maybe he didn’t want it confused with other same named songs. I didn’t care for this one all that much.

Of the three songs I prefer the Curtis Mayfield song best, but I dislike this particular recording.

Of the three recordings I prefer the style of Ricky Nelson the best and the song is not too bad either.

So based on this I guess my vote goes to Ricky Nelson, but I would vote for another version of the Mayfield song.

Was that too confusing? I think you might get what I’m saying.

      1. Yes, definitely Hyland’s version–I’d forgotten that he’d had this hit. There’s also a version I like better that can be found on a Curtis Mayfield tribute album–it’s by Bruce Springsteen back when I liked him better.
