The Stampeders are a band out of Calgary, Alberta, Canada, home of the annual Calgary Stampede, the annual rodeo that in most normal years happens this month. This will be the first year without the rodeo since it began in 1912… Anyway, The Stampeders had a #1 hit with “Sweet City Woman” in Canada, the first of a string of hits in their home country, earning them a Juno award in 1972. The song went to #8 in the US, making it their only Top 40 song in the US.

This is the version that I know…it’s been a while

Some classic rock stations still play it. The Stampeders were very popular in Canada, but as usual this is the only song that got any play here.

I never knew who did this but it’s good to find out. I do want to check the Dave Clark Five version out. Its hard to wrap my head around a Dave Clark Five in 1971.

Which version are you familiar with? I know the Dave Clark 5 did a version, and so did Lawrence Welk, of all people…

Dave Clark 5 for sure. I don’t believe I would have listened to LW.

It’s a good station but repetitive. However, they have tidbits of history about the groups, etc., which I enjoy.

96 Rock was like that. You could almost set your watch by what song was on during the week. “Stairway To Heaven? Must be luinchtime.”

Hmm, I know this but it doesn’t sound quite right. Has it been covered do you know? Nice song regardless.

I looked it up. Multiple covers, most notably by the Dave Clark 5
