Song of the Day: Steve Carlisle, “WKRP In Cincinnati (Theme)”

Looks like we’re doing TV themes this week. I’m not complaining; some TV themes are minor masterpieces. Case in point: the theme for the TV series WKRP In Cincinnati, which ran for four years (1978-1982) on CBS in the US. Allegedly, the show was based on producer Hugh Wilson’s experiences as the station manager at WQXI in Atlanta. The song was written by Tom Wells with lyrics by Wilson and sung by Steve Carlisle, though it was rumored that Richard Sanders, who played newsman Les Nessman on the show, had actually sung it. It was released as a single in 1979 and reached #65 on the Hot 100 in 1981, and at #29 on the Adult Contemporary chart in 1982.

    1. I can’t say who my favorite is, because they’re all so good. They were running it on MeTV for a while, long enough that I could see most of the series.

  1. I always liked this song and I love this TV Show…it is so funny. I never even heard that Richard Sanders sang it but I could see it now but..who knows. It just would show how many people have great voices that we would be surprised to know.
